Default Transmission help needed.

Seems like all I do is think about how I'm going to rebuild. The motor question is for the most part settled. Still nervous, but settled. Just hate reading all the threads about spun bearing, motors starting with problems etc. What I do need some help with is the Tranny. I have an 18 with no first and bad 3rd syncro. I have a 25 spline that shifts ok but I have alot of wear on the first gear on the input shaft (don't know what gear it is) it's long with a bit of spiral. Also grinds going into second if your getting on it at all. I've thought about just sending the 18 to kormex and dropping the 2000 grand. Since I just bought the 25 I just hate to do that. What I would really like is to find someone or some place local that could take the 2 and make one really good one. Obviously I might have to buy some bearing, synchros maybe even a gear. Would like to get it built with less than a $1000 more in it. But most importantly I don't want to have to worry about it or think about it, just drive it. The car will probably not be my daily driver any more. I would really love to run at the Imapala thing but pretty sure it won't be ready by then. The motor will have 400 maybe a little more to the wheels. Ok give me your ideas

I just finished doing a ridiculously thorough rebuild of my own trans (not exactly my first rodeo either, lol). If you can give me a relatively relaxed time schedule, I can pretty much assure you that I could do this for $1000 or less. If you're in a rush, I'm not your man.

When you say relaxed schedule, we talk'n weeks, months or doggy years?

I would really like to have it together at least a few weeks before the texas gathering. Sooner would be better, but i really just need time to test and tune and finish out the rest.

Probably wouldn't work with your schedule but I'd love to watch and learn, mainly on the re-assemble part. Got a feeling this won't be my first rodeo either.

Yeah, I forgot about the TX gathering for a second. You're right, I should probably just focus on my own car

understood. Ok, I have the downloaded transmission manual. If I'm willing to buy a press, (always willing to buy tools). Is this something I could possibly tackle myself. Any resources you could suggest. Not to worried about being able to take things apart and put them back together, just don't know about the specs and pre-load or whatever all that stuff is that when done right means your tranny will actually last.

You should actually be a little concerned about the disassembly and reassembly. Our transmission isn't the simplest in the world, so you'll really need to pay attention and take pictures if you want a chance at putting it back together successfully the first time.

I don't use a press for tranny rebuilds, so you'll need to get advice else where for that I use a gear puller, modified as necessary, an oven, a 2" steel pipe, wood, and a hammer... Oh, and brake clean, simple green, c-clip pliers, flat head screw drivers, metric hex sockets, torque wrench, The Right Stuff, assembly lube, black synthetic grease, and a small punch for the center diff pins.

Since this is your first rodeo and we can safely(?) assume that the bell housing, center housing and end case are all the ORIGINALS, I wouldn't worry too much about preload. Look at your trans though... Does the bell housing look the same color of ... dirty ... as the mid-housing? If not, you'll want to investigate the preloading... And that's a whole other ball game.

I gotta run.

Hey, if u could get it to my shop, we could do the work for about that amount as long as parts are available and what you say is wrong is really what going on. Call my shop and ask for Jamie my mechanic (ASE Certified) and tell him mark told you to call: 210-392-5589. He can meet that price, maybe $200 but it will work and have a warranty.
