Hey guys so I have my brothers 1995 3000GT SL which I had the clutch replaced and the crank pulley now the car wont start. Mechanic checked the crank sensor and its fine. Now he says its getting fuel but the spark is weak he thinks its the PTU and its also called the ignition Module. If anyone has this part and can help me out asap please let me know. I dont want to purchase a new one for 160$ to just find out that thats not the problem. If anyone has this and can Help me I will appriciate it greatly. My brother needs the car asap and its been 3 weeks he has been without it I have already invested lots of money into it.

I have a spare one here you can give a shot. I've never seen a failed PTU cause a "weak" spark though. Typically they fail completely, or only fire in 4 or the 6 cylinders. Pm me if you still need it

Hey man thanks a lot for that I actually pulled mine off my SL to help my bro out and that didnt fix the problem as I though. Well the mechanic has done almost everything car seems to be out of timing he says T belt is all fine he has already checked the crank sensor, PTU, ANy pinched wires or what not, and he order some other sensor today which didnt do the trick it still doesnt want to fire up. I also tried putting in a new MAF no go again. I am running out of Ideas and my brother is running out of hope he needs a car he has no way to get to work. The mechanic ordered some sensor from walpole which will come in tommorow we will see how that goes. I dont know what to do next he tried almost everything spent a lot of time on this car and still wont start I dont know what to do!!! Any help will be apriciated. Thanks a lot!

definitely sounds like an annoying problem. I couldn't say whats causing the no star, but the process of going through and checking everything should get you the answer eventually. Check for spark, see if fuel is coming out of injectors. If its no spark it could be PTU, coil pack, ECU, cam or crank angle sensor. Does it just crank and sputter? or does it not try to fire at all?

So I am getting fuel, spark is weird its sometimes there and sometimes its not there, I tried replacing the PTU didnt help, I did not replace the coil pack, I didnt check the ECU, Today we will be checking the cam and crank sensors. It cranks but it seems to be out of timing and it just wont catch, ti cranks very easily but just wont fire up. Weirdest thing is I dont know why am I even replacing all these parts to find the problem because the car ran before I dropped it off and he even started it and drove it into the shop. The crank pulley did fall apart and the clutch went at about the same time. Thanks for any help man!! |

Yea that is pretty weird, nothing directly related to doing the clutch or crank pulley should be able to cause a starting issue. The crank angle sensor is near the crank pulley, the only thing I can think of is if the crank pulley failed cut the wire to the crank sensor, or caused the belt to cut the wire to the crank sensor. That would definitely cause no spark or intermittent spark.
I'd just test the sensors with a multimeter before replacing them, its sometimes easier to just swap them if you have spares, but its definitely not easier if you have to buy new sensors. Tim |

Hey tim thanks a lot for your help I deffinatly appriciate it man. Well the final result is we tried all the sensors put all new once and no luck at all it still wont start. The only thing we have not tried was the ECU, and MFI relays. I see you live in the area would you have any time to come out and help me out with it because I am just helpless right now the mechanic gave up too he has not worked on these cars soo much before so he is just pulling his hair out and he is just sick of me. LMK if you have any time or a chance to help me out or if you know anyone I just spent soo much money on this thing I am broke because of it but its my brothers car and he needs it to get to and from work. Its been 3 weeks he has been without a car and I really feel bad. Thanks

Needham, yea your pretty close, I wouldn't mind taking a trip by to see if I can find anything. Is the car at your place, or the mechanics? I'm not sure if he replaced the crank angle sensor, but thats a little involved and requires the car be jacked up and a full set of tools.
