Are you going to do a full rebuild with rings and bearings, or just an upper (heads) rebuild?

A full rebuild will cost ~$1200 in parts (including some valves), ~$400 at the machine shop, and $1900+ in labor. With the right tools and know-how, it's about a 35 hour job on a NA. And those prices assume the crank. pistons, and cylinders bores are all ok.

35 hrs to do it right. (cringes at flashbacks of TJs n/a)

You should do a little research and find out exactly what he is replacing, and #1 make sure he is using mitsu parts for the timing components at the very least. Ive done turbo car rebuilds for 700 only labor fyi.

For that price, he's probably pulling the head(s), with the engine still in the car (difficult, but doable), and replacing only the bent valves, head gaskets, timing belt, and tensioner(s). Nothing to the bottom end or internals. I'm just guessing though. Curious to find out.

I'd do the whole 120K. See exactly what that mechanic is planning on doing. I feel he's trying to screw you over. If Matt could find the time to do it for you, that'd probably be your best bet. You need to decide what you want done before we can give you a ballpark price. I could probably do it in a couple weekends.

My suggestions:
rebuild heads (replace valves, new VSS, big bore lifters if you have the money)
check the pistons, if they're ok, leave the bottom end alone
do a 120K
