Default Moving to Michigan

About to graduate from college and want to move to Michigan to try and break into the automotive field. Plan on going to LTU to pursue an automotive masters degree. Will also be moving with the gf who will be attending LTU us an undergrad so need a safe neighborhood for her that is within about 15 minutes from the school.

Anyone have any suggestions on where to live or look? Looking to spend about $1000 for rent and utilities. Plan on having 3 cars plus a motorcycle so parking is a must. Would also like a garage so I can continue working on cars.

Thanks,
Josh

Farmington hills/livonia is a very nice area, not to far, more than 15 minutes but very nice, ubt consider out econemy before moving here, things are very rough in michigan, worst econemy in the nation, the auto industry isn't taking many people in

I have been considering the economy, and where I'm from all the jobs are in NY. That means high rent or about 6 grand a year in tolls. I would like to continue grad courses at LTU as well so..... I know the auto industry is not taking people but better to be set up and ready for when they start again (which will happen eventually) otherwise, the jobs there are probably about the same in other fields as everywhere else.

As of now, starting salary in NJ/NY for what I can go into is about 60k. Add the cost of tolls, rent, etc vs that of Michigan and I think I will have just about the same chance of surviving.

How is the job market for other positions? Construction management, field techs, etc. Have lots of experience in many various fields so I should be ok.

Thanks,
Josh

Agreed. Southfield (around LTU) itself isn't the best area, and anything directly south or southeast is moving closer to Detroit. Watch your car insurance rates go up in those directions. Going west or southwest is better. North will be more expensive. PM if you want more details.

Warren is a drive east across I-696, which usually moves (very) quickly except for rush hours with accidents.

Finding a garage won't be easy. They are rare and usually more expensive with apartments. They are also for parking, not working on cars -- often separated from your apartment. With the depressed real estate market, you may find a house with garage to rent for less than an apartment.

Have you asked the school for housing suggestions?
