Well see heres the thing, Im in college and i work part time. And Im not very good being a mechanic haha. I can do simple things, I have done a starter, installed a turbo timer, oil change, intake, and tune up. Im afraid of doing all that stuff I listed on the last post. And my dad is a mechanic, but im sure u guys remember how it was with ur dads when u had ur first car and u wanted 2 do stuff 2 it. There always like WTF is this, and what does it do and y do u need it. And my dad dosent have the time 2 help me all the time, and dont have all the specialty tools for the car, and he dosent want 2 do a engine swap or anything that big. It suxs. Last time I needed a clutch I ended up payn 4 it : ( I thought that was kinda stupid. But I want 2 stand over my mechanic and watch lol. Take pictures lol.

If you don't feel brave enough to tackle it yourself you have two options in this area: Jeff (440 4x4) or Maddog...both have an extensive waiting list.

It sounds like you want to learn but don't wanna mess sheet up. Honestly none of that stuff is all that difficult. It is just a little more involved than your basic intake. Take parts off, keep track of them, then put them back on. The only real specialised tool required is an engine hoist and that is only for something as extensive as a swap. If you really want this to be a project 3000 it should be YOUR project 3000.

I work two jobs. I had never rebuilt an engine before two years ago or done anything more extensive than struts. I tried, failed a little (depends on who you ask), tried again and succeeded. If I fook my sheet up now, I know exactly how to fix it.

Hehe, I hear u man. I really wish I could make this just ALL MINE project car, I really hate on relying on other people when it comes 2 my car, cuz I usually have 2 wait on them, or I just dont want 2 be a bother as well. Mostly Im scared of fookn shit up lol. I took my damn time on the starter lol, took me 2 hrs and 30 min. lol Wanted 2 make sure everything was perfect. But I think Im going 2 buy a cheap civic or hatch and mess around with it, cuz that i dont care if its broken or not. But I love my vr4, it took me 4 yrs 2 get one : ( It all started when I was a kid and I saw someone with one, and I was thinkn 2 my self god damn wth is that car, that thing is insane I must have one. Than as soon as i got out HS all I could afford was the SL, than I bought a really nice SL that I wish was on the forums it only had 50k on it, and I picked it up from my job for only 4k. I turned out and sold it for 8k on ebay and bought a vr4. I thought it was in better condition when buyn though, when it came I was shocked : ( Def not what I thought I was buyn, but I said wth let me fix this car up, I dont think it would take that much money 2 fix it up. A lot of stuff that usually breaks u replace with aftermarket anyway u know.

+1

my first experience of doing ANYTHING, including oil changes was on this car and I feel confident doing anything from a 60k to a clutch swap to even pulling the engine... all of which I have done, granted I enlisted the help of those who have done such work and of course stealth316.com the BEST resource for step by step DIY'ers

Vineet Singh's service manuals on CD is also a must....

as for the 2nd time I needed a clutch done I was in a similar predicament as you as I was down at school and didn't have the luxury of a garage or time, so I was lucky enough to get on Jeff's schedule and I must say it was worth every penny!

it's the 3/S Service Manual scanned and put into pdf format... a lot easier to have laying around than the big thick books themselves...

not sure how I could send them as the files themselves are pretty big(76mb for the Chassis manual and about 20mb for the Electrical)

the funny thing is that Vineet is from the Chicago area, but not sure if he ever posted on this thread or the other big Chicago thread, but I think he was on 3si...

Alright, I need some help in finding a 3/4 synchro, if I can't come up with anything in the next couple weeks, i'll put the trans back together, get a decent clutch and sell the car. I'm out of options, the vendors on this board are no longer selling new 3/4 synchros. This should be a wake up call for everybody. Synchros don't last forever and the 4-6 grand for supercars dogbox is more than some are paying for these cars now. If anybody has any clue about where to find a new synchro that isn't brass, let me know.
