Default Yet another transmission problem

All of this started at the same time. I normall drive IN overdrive. All of a sudden overdrive light does not come on on the dash, switch on shifter DOES work. When it is IN overdrive the car only has first gear then goes into neutral when it is OUT of overdrive the car runs fine just feels as if first gear is drawn out too far. UNLESS I step on the gas all the way, then the car wont shift out of first. Basically the only way I can drive my car is very gingerly OUT of overdrive. When overdrive is ON, and I try to manually shift out of first it will not come out. When overdrive is off, and I manually try to shift, it wont come out either. Something is seriously wrong with my transmission and/or the components and this is about to be the last straw. Is it possible that a tranny of a different year is in my car and its just different enough to work for a while but not correctly because my tranny has be swapped multiple times by a Firestone. (My dad knows them there). Are there numbers on the tranny that could tell me if its correct or not.
