Default Tranny problems - Slips from 3rd to Neutral

Hello everyone,

Recently when I was driving my car at about 45 mph it started to bog down and finally slipped into neutral. Every since then, once my car gets into 3rd gear it's in there for about a half a second and then slips into neutral. This happens every single time. 1 and 2 work just fine.

I took it to a local shop and they told me I needed a brand new trans and quoted me a price of $5400 for a new tranny and labor. This seems like a ridiculous amount of money for this job to me. I know for a fact they did not drop the tranny. I've read a lot of posts about end clutches going out but I'm not sure I have that problem since my slips out of 3rd and not 4th.

I also think it would be a lot cheaper to buy a used tranny and then pay a knowledgeable mechanic to put it in. I've also heard of people on this site getting rebuilds from IPT. Basically I ask to my fellow 3kgt owners, where do I go from here and what are my options? If it matters my transmission fluid was flushed and changed 15000 miles ago.

It's your end clutch. It's slipping out of 3rd because it is shifting into over drive but can't because your end clutch is toast. A new end clutch is only about $90 and it's fairly easy to replace. Before jumping to conclusions that you need a new transmission I suggest replacing your end clutch first and you will very likely save a few thousand dollars.

I thought it could possibly be the end clutch. The one thing that made me think it wouldn't be is the fact that almost immediately after I get into 3rd it slips into neutral. I would think if it was trying to shift into overdrive it wouldn't do so immediately.

Ok so now I do believe it is the end clutch. When I turn OD off it goes into 3rd just fine and stays there. I am taking it to a local transmission shop and hopefully they can verify this. Looks like I won't go broke after all.

Hey ps13matt,
it sounds like your problem is similar to my issue. Did you car rev to 5k once it hit OD and all power dropped? Here is my thread-
Only Brought it in for an Inspection...

I've already replaced the end clutch a year or two ago. Could it really be dead again?
