Default Tick Tick Tick sound

Greetings,
Just need some advice if anyone has experienced this. This occurred After I changed my tranny fluid and filter on my fwd sohc 3k.
I am getting a continuous clicking noise from the tranny while in reverse and drive,(almost sounds electrical in nature) Oddly, the noise disappears as soon as I rev just a hair above say 800 rpms. Then when it falls down to around
5oo rpms the clicking comes back. Im lost at this point...any advice
Thanks,
Barry
ps-could it be an exaust leak???

First and foremost, welcome to 3Si. You came to the right place.

The first thing you need to do is try to pin point the ticking. Raise your hood, and listen as closely as possible, and maybe even post a video of it.

The most common ticking from a 3S, is lifter tick. It's essentially harmless, and more often than not can be cured by using 4 quarts of good oil, and bottle Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer.

When the automatic transmission engages a gear, there is a mechanilectrical sound heard, similar to dragging a knife acrossed screen, kind of like a fast ticking. It really shouldn't be audible form inside the car though.

All I can say for now, is to pinpoint the noise, and we'll go from there. Let us know something as soon as you can.

-Dave

Hey,
My camera vidieo recorder is down for now so no audio at moment. But, if the ticking noise came about after filter change: Could I have possibly used the old bolts with the new filter? I cannot for the sake of me remember if i even got new bolts with the new filter. Could this be an issue, or even cause a tick

No, I wouldn't think so man. The bolts shouldn't matter at all.

I know all signs point to the tranny, since it came about post fluid/filter change, but you need to be VERY sure that this sound is coming from the transmission before we further delv into this.

okay,
today i used a stethoscope to listen in on the ticking sound. It is coming from the tranny oil pan area near the top portion. It only ticks in reverse and drive and at idle. It goes away when given gas and rpms raise slightly above 950 to 1000. Any advice
thanks,
Barry

It really sounds like an electrical type click, could it be a solenoid that is there in the tranny pan top area. If it is, how much do you think this costs?

well. I took the car by a reputable 3k mech, he says the tick is from a transmission solenoid, and nothing to worry about. Im still worried. I am now researching info about the shift/ or tranny solenoids if anyone has input on these......prices, go-bys for the work, etc.
