strange noise
Hello
The transmission in my car started acting up in a strange way recently.
When transmission oil is cold (i.e after the car sat for a night) after starting the engine, a strange and loud rattling noise comes from the bellhousing (that's what I managed to find out). When you put the tranny into any gear (be it D,R) the noise goes away after couple of seconds. Then if you put it again into N or P the it comes back but it is not that loud. When you drive for several dozen of seconds it is ok for rest of the day. For all I was able to find it appears as there it has to do with oil viscosity and pressure perhaps (as far as I know when you put the tranny into a gear it changes the way oil circulation in the transmission) - it gets louder when it is colder outside. It started to occur in a progressive way - at first (say 5 months ago) it made this sound only for 1 or 2 seconds after starting and there was no need to shift into a gear. Now the sound doesn't fade unless you put it into gear. Any ideas? Is is some kind of bushing or bearing on the converter shaft? Some oil passages plugged? Maybe the oil filter needs changing? (been there for no less than 25K miles).Oil as far as I'm concerned is fine (no color change, not burnt). Never had the pleasure to take the transmission off but it may be necessary this time, I'm afraid...
PS.
Apart from that there is no other disturbing sympthoms - transmission shifts OK for a...18 year old. I can post a video tomorrow if it'lll help
