as the title says, it's idling erratically...goes between a normal idle and a rough one...when it's idling rough, it's sputters when gas is applied...any ideas? I had it towed home, and now it's idling fine...wtf? this car is my daily driver...any thoughts on this problem are appreciated...

How does your IAC look? If you give it gas while it's idling low it will kill it. A good steady idle shouldn't die.
You may want to try backing the idle control screw out a bit. That will bump your idle up more and give the engine more of a cushion when the gas is thrown at it. ![]()

I've been here way too long

I would actually buy a new eclipse. Albert and I sat in one at the Portland Auto Show and they weren't too bad.

TPS was checked when the tranny was rebuilt...TCU was just replaced, and that wouldn't have any bearing on idle, as far as I know...if the ECU is going, that would effect idle as it can take two cylinders out of the picture in an instant (I know this from experience)...so, IAC is what? plz excuse me, I still don't know all my acronyms yet...ignition coil pack? what I found odd is how it pops in and out of a normal idle, even right before my eyes...and when it did that, it would consistantly drop and even out to the same respective rpms...I really don't know better, but that seems like electronic/electrical behaviour...also, after the tow, and when it was idling fine, it blew a little darkish exhaust out for a few revs, and then it seemed to be back to normal...am I correct in guessing that would be due to driving the car several blocks on less than 6 cylinders before I got towed? Thx for your help so far...

Idle Air Control. If you do a search there are a lot of threads around about cleaning them out and having them work great again.
That's just about the only thing I can think of that would have it idle rough and then normal again. |
