Default How much does an automatic rebuild cost?

My daughter found a 3000GT for a great price. The owner says it doesn't have 5th gear. The car is an automatic. so obviously no 5th gear. What can cause no top gear and what does it cost to fix?

End clutch failures are pretty common in that trans. As long as that's the only problem, it can be fixed in the car just by removing the end cover.

Well, lets start with 5 gear. It doesn't have one. The owner was feeling the lack of lock up. 4 plus lock up feels like a 5th. So that being said, I believe you need a new trans comp. They run about $400 or so. Been there done that. That may be just the begining though. depanding on how long he drove it like that. A full auto rebuild will be high. Like $2500. Or more. Teach her to drive a stick.

its sounds ike my tranny in my 94, it doesnt have overdrive because I put a 99 atx in the 94 and it doesnt mesh with the computer, changing the computer doesnt work either because the wiring harnass needs to be adjusted changed and thats something nobody has done yet to date.
So what year is your car and give us the part number on the tranny.

Who comes up with all this stuff ?

The difference from 93 to 99 is none . 92 and below the lock-up solenoid has more resistance . Thats the sum of all electrical differences . the TCM strategies, Logic, solenoid truth table are all the same.

There is no difference in the transmissions . Yes, the manufacturer has different part numbers for every year, Thats because they ship the transmission with the speedo head , pulse generators, servo switch etc.

If you install a 99 trans into a 94 it will work.
If you wanted to fix your vehicle yourself , I would go through the proceedure to troubleshoot it here on the board and we will find the problem down to the component level if you wish, Just start a thread and point me to it. If you don't beleive me and think I'm nuts, thats fine too
but I have to post so that others don't get mislead . I hope you can understand that.
