Hello ATX-ers!
I desperately need advise! My brother owns a 1996 3000GT with an ATX, (130,000 miles). He was steadily cruising on the highway at 70 when he suddenly heard the evil sound of gears grinding...suddenly he lost all acceleration. The engine is running fine although the transmission is not engaging in drive or reverse...there is an odd sound of something grinding. I had the car towed to a trusted and respected transmission shop. This shop works on domestics and imports and has done quality work for my friends in the past. This shop has been around for 20 years. The shop owner just called to inform me that the transmisison is blown and needs to be re-built including a new torque converter. He quoted me a price of $1,800 to $1,900 including a 2 year warranty. My questions are as follows: 1. Is $1,800 to $1,900 a fair price? 2. Should I locate a used transmission and have it installed? (If so, is there a well known and trusted source? 3. Is there any good transmission modifications that should be performed while the rebuild is taking place? (My brothers car is stock and he is more interested in reliability rather than performance). 4. Any miscellaneous advise would be appreciated...is there anything else I should know? Many many thanks!! Nikos 33 Royal Oak, MI 1995 3000GT, 5-Speed

Instead of rebuilding, I would search around the internet for a remanufactured transmission. I am sure they can beat $1800.
When he gets the trans, if he has the time tell him to send out his valve body to IPT (www.importperformancetrans.com) so they can install a shift kit for him. He will love the new feeling his car gives him every time it shifts. The shift kit is also a great product for extending the life of your transmission. Also, when the shop fills the trans with fluid, be sure they check the fluid level in neutral. I cannot emphasize this enough.

If this is his daily driver, and he drives it like one, then the above advice should suffice...if he is more aggresive (face reality when evaluating his driving habits), then you should consider the other products offered by IPT, since this will not only make the tranny stronger, but will enhance performance at the same time...weigh this decision carefully, since it does add cost

There are one of two things i would do in this situation. I would either try to pick up a good used tranny around here for about $400-$500 since a lot of people are doing an ATX to MTX swap. Or i would call up mentor mitsubishi and either order a brand new one from them ($1,393 includes torque converter too) or ask them about getting a remanned, which would probably run about $200 less.

Are those price quotes comparable to the atx trans as well or did you check separately?
