Question Volume control sporatic

Hey everyone, I've been having some trouble with my volume control, it seems to do the opposite of what its supposed to but only at first, for example if I attempt to lower the volume it will first go way up and than a few seconds later start going down as I keep turning. the opposite also happens when i attempt to raise the volume.

I've never really done any audio/video work before so I thought I'd see what you guys thought. Could this be a loose wire or a short? Can it be fixed? Thanks in advance.

P.S. if this turned out to be an un-fixable problem and I had to buy a new HU, would one that decodes MP3s allow me to play them through the stock cd changer in the trunk?

Common problem. Off hand I’d say you need a new hu. More info needed for Mitsu options. Year, Model, and if it has an Infinity system.

Thats par for the course. I bought and sold quite a few a while back. All of the 3kgt infinity hu's had steering wheel control capability. On my original HU I needed to use the steering wheel control to control the hu volume correctly.

I got one of these just before the NG and haven't had the time to do a good post with pics on them yet:

You can use another late model mitsu hu, it's infinity, double din, fits perfectly, and is plug and play. These have 6 disc changers internally. They are mp3 compatible, have rds info for the stations, and identify your folders and songs on mp3 discs. But no clock lol

Another thing.... Your changer if perfect is worth $125 on ebay. But the changer needs to be packed well so no shipping damage occurs. The best way to ship those changers is to put some of the shipping screws back in them.

Thanks for the advice Dave,

So you're saying that an Infinity HU from any late model Mitsu would work?

The radios will work, except not all have steering wheel control capability. BUT>> The only one that works with your changer is the style you have. I’ve posted all the details a couple of times previously except for the one I mentioned above.

I've had that same problem with the volume control on the deck but was able to adjust the volume with the steering wheel controls. To fix it you need to remove the stereo unit and take it apart so you can re-solder the loose wire from the volume control to the pcb board. Pretty easy job, should take you 45 minutes total. The stereo comes right out after removing 4 screws. Good luck!

It's worth a try for sure but it's not always a fix all. It happened on the power supply end too. There were many radios that wouldn't work on. I remember there was a wd40 post that worked too. It seemed to me It also happened on the first year of next generation of them to a lesser extent. When It got to the point of switching modules to make one good one I quit. The other thing I would say If you don't know what you're doing don't try it.

Dave, if you've got any info on this other headunit that's mp3, etc.. I'd be in as well. I've been having the same problem as the OP for quite some time now, but I don't have steering controls
