They probably came with one. Called an inline crossover by some. The problem is when amplifiers are driven too hard something called clipping occurs and a dc voltage is introduced to the speakers. The main purpose of it (Bass blocker/crossover) is to block DC from getting to the speaker and warping or frying the voice coil. Tweeters are more susceptible to damage from clipping..
