Default Stock HU problem

OK so i was with some friends in my car and i put a song on from my ipod and about 5 seconds into the song, the radio shuts off. It still has power going to it though, the lights for it still come on and it displays time (the wrong time). But none of the buttons work except for the display button. If i hold it down, the time starts blinking a if you were going to set it. I put a 5amp fuse in it, but i dont know if thats the right one. And the radio doesnt say CODE on the front so the dealer cant really help me out right now. Anybody have any ideas?

Are you sure you have all the power?
Don't know about every 3s radio and year but.....
- You should have a wire that has power all the time.
- You should have a wire that is only on when your ignition is on.
- You should have a wire that controls your illumination (based on the dimmer for your dash lighting).

One other thought. Do you have a steering wheel radio control? If so press the AM/FM button on it. It should turn on HU. If that works you have a problem with the knob and/or buttons on the front of the radio.

When you first start your car does the radio show the time? If yes, what happens to the antenna when you use the thumb controls on the wheel, i.e. does it go up or not? If it goes up, I would start with the fuses under dash to make sure that they are all good. I have a 94 SL, and mine says to have a 10 amp fuse in it. I would start there. Let me know what happens, I will be working on my stock radio tomorrow and may be able to give more info then.

Check (that is, reseat) the connectors on the ribbon cables from the front faceplate of the radio to the chassis. You'll have to take the radio apart to check, but it's pretty easy to do that as I recall. Mine radio did something like what you're describing a couple of years ago, and that was all it turned out to be. Good luck!
