Hi all,
I just bought a '92 vr4 from Ping (pkchino) here on the forums and need some help wiring up a new amp. I am a total nub when it comes to audio systems and couldn't find anything helpful in my searches; please forgive me if this is a really stupid problem. Anyway, here's the story: When I bought the car it came with a new sony 4-channel amp and the stock 6 channel amp, both of which were not installed. All the necessary wires are already routed to the trunk, where I want to install the amps, I just can't figure out what some of them are and where they are supposed to go. Here's the wiring diagram I have come up with (I'm not sure if its right and have no idea what to do with the stuff circled in yellow): ![]() If anybody could check over my diagram and let me know what I should do with the yellow circled things, I would really appreciate it. Also, here is a blank version of the diagram if it would be easier to just indicate the wirings in paint. ![]() Thanks! |

The 92 did not have a stock amp. they did not have 6 channels either. The dash speakers were jumpered to the door speakers in all 3s except infinity (94-99)
What I see is an amp that was using speaker line inputs. (white plugs) The square white plug in your hand needs to re wired to the white plug on your new amp The lower plug wiring needs to be confirmed with a meter but it looks like the amp power and it's turn on wire?

It probably won't help much, but typically an amp will have a ground, a power wire, and a remote wire. At least, the 2 installs I've done were set up that way.
Did you try sending a PM to pkchino?

Thanks for the help guys.
@Dave57 I just assumed it was the stock amp cuase it was pretty beat up and looked OEM. How do I can I tell where to wire the speaker line inputs on the new amp? @jba3 Thanks for the info. pkchino was going to have the wiring done by someone else, so he can't really help me. Does anybody know what the wires in the bottom right of my pictures are? I assume three of them are the REM, +12V, and GND, but I don't know which ones and I have no idea what the fourth wire is. |

You really need to verify the 4 wires with a meter. One can assume red is positive but I would verify it with a meter..... |

Place the red/+ against the bare end of the wires. Verify what has 12V (could be ~10V to ~14V), that's your power wire. The ground wire should have under 0.25V (hopefully 0). Your remote wire is typically a very thin wire, used only to send a signal to the amps that the head unit is powered up. I haven't wired up a system that used more than positive, ground, and remote, including multi-amp and capacitor systems. ![]() Turn on wire = remote wire in this case |
