Cool need help replacing stock speakers/system

O.K., I know that this thread has probably been asked by many others and I've done the search of old threads but need your help anyway. I don't know much about car audio, so make your answers simple (please).

My dash and door speakers are blown, rear speakers are still fine. I went to Bestbuy today and they told me I'd need a new amp to run new speakers as the stock amp isn't powerful enough to amplify aftermarket speakers?. apparently no one makes 2 1/4 inch speakers so I guess I just replace the speakers with 1 inch tweeters that come with a component speaker set (right?).

I just want to have a decent speaker system equal to if not somewhat better than the stock system. I'm 32 years old and married with a house - not cruisin' for babes anymore, but just want a good listening system. Any advice is welcome. I have install directions per Jeff Lucius when I do replace speakers-so i don't need info regarding install, just components needed to be replaced (speakers and amp. if needed).

Thanks,

VFIB

Just get a nice set of components and a 4 channel amp to power everything. Shouldn't cost more than $500. Or if you dont want to spend a lot of money (and our stock tweeters are poorly located) just replace the 6.5s in the door and be satisfied. If you want to buy them from your local best buy/circuit city/hh gregg - go to their audio sections, listen to a few speakers (amped versus not amped) and see what you like. I am sure that they will have a basic set up for you that you can enjoy.

I work at Best Buy, I sell laptops, but I know how to sell speakers. The Best ones we carry are Infinity's, Alpine , and Pioneer, In that order(If your going to add a sub) Dont ever let them install it. Especially on 3000GT's alot of panels must me removed, that the install bay guys dont care if they break or not. Ive heard horror stories of that place. If you going to put a sub, then get Infinity(for the price their great) If your not, the Alpine has a nice bass withought a sub.

6 1/2 in side panels and 6 by 9's in the back
Just my 2 cents.

Best buy is correct about some of it it does depend on the speakers put in. I call it under driven speaker syndrome. Replace the speakers and then swap the amp. Mitsu makes better amps that are plug and play.

I bought an amp from a 2001 Diamante off eBay. Like Dave said, the plugs matched up exactly. I just had to slightly modify the mounting bracket because the Diamante amp had a different mounting bracket.

I picked up another amp that I have to test yet.

So there may be another mitsu amp to add to the list.
