I thought you were looking for the Mitsu valve spring compressor. The only thing this tool allows for is to compress the valves with the heads (and engine) installed. Yours will be the first to compress the springs w/o removing the cams.

I am 99% sure I saw a pic of a Mitsu tool in the manual or on a site for removing the rocker arms with cams in place to change valve lifter. As I recall it hooked onto the CAM shaft to depress the valve enough to remove the rocker arms.

(Or perhaps I was just dreaming?!)

EUREKA - I GOT IT!

One minute to:

1. Attach tool
2. Tighten a little - remove rocker arm
3. Tighten more - remove keepers
4. Loosen to remove tool
5. Remove valve retainer

Less than a minute to:

6. Attach o ring to top of valve stem (to keep it from falling into cylinder)
7. Remove pressure from cylinder
8. Lower valve stem
9. Remove spring
10. Pull up valve
11. Re-apply pressure
12. Remove o ring

Two minutes to:

13. Remove VSS
14. Lube valve stem
15. Carefully install new VSS

And less than 2 minutes to put everything back together again.

5 minutes to replace each VSS without removing the heads or removing the timing belt/camshafts - NOT BAD!!

ok - here is the plan.
1 you do your valve stems this weekend.
2 I paypal you a shipping and rental amount
3 I do my valve stems next weekend.

Sounds like a plan to me

Replacing VSS without pulling the cams...priceless!

40% improvement in speed:

1. Remove rocker arms, keepers, retainers (x4) (This goes very fast!)
2. Attach washers to valve stems (x4)
3. De-pressurize cylinder and push down valves (x4)
4. Remove valve springs (x4)
5. Pull up valves (x4) and pressurize
6. Remove washers (x4)
7. Remove VSS (x4)
8. Install VSS (x4)
9. Reinstall washers with strings attached (x4)
10. Depressurize and push down valves (x4)
11. Reinstall springs with string through spring (x4)
12. Pull valves up with strings (x4)
13. Pressurize
14 Remove washers (x4)
15. Reinstall retainers, keepers, rocker arms (x4)

Replacing VSS in groups of 4 saves ~half the time.

Two areas remaining for improvement:

1. Still looking for a more positive/refined way to remove the old VSS

2. Looking to lower the risk of losing a keeper - perhaps a powerful magnet on the tool that presses down on the valve retainer.

Time to do a search and find out if someone already has a patent on the tool I just invented.
