I will do that - maybe tomarrow. BTW I edited my post because I said injector instead of lifter. Odd

Just wanted to say that I skimmed over the first page of this thread, followed the directions, and assembled a valve spring compressor... It was a success. It's kind of a pain to use, but it's not bad at all! Don't expect to be able to do all 24 valve stem seals alone. Chances are, you'll want someone to compress the springs for you while you insert/remove the keepers.

VSS install rear bank cams in place.

Well I did the rear today. started at about 8:00 and and finished up at about 6:00. I would not wish this on anyone. I am so sore right now
few things
1. Remove the breaker bar from the extionion that turns the crank. I got Throwen off of a step stool when pressurising the cylinder (was not quite TDCC)
2. needle nose plires do work the best for removing the VSS
3. crawling onto the engine is the best way to install the the keepers.

I seem to have helped - after about an hour of driving my knock counts went from 10 down to 3. I am sure it is going to take a few days to get the crap out of the cylinders.

Here is a little test - Which spark plugs ran a week with the new VSS. Which ran a week with the old VSS
Sorry the picture sucks - I am shaking so bad right now. Glad I am not a surgeon(so are other people). http://www.electronicsam.com/images/spark.JPG and large Sorry.

my compression guage kit, comes with an adaptor to fill the cylinder with air so you can replace the springs. never used it but seems like it would be easier

Sounds like you have the right tool to pressurize the cylinder to keep the valve from falling into the cylinder but you still need a tool to compess the spring so you carn remove the valve keepers/retainer/spring to replace the VSS.

BTW - The problem I had with a burned valve was that I did not replace the VSS soon enough. Good idea to replace VSS at the 120K or else risk damaging a valve like I did at 175K. #1 also seems prone to burning/damage. (Have found three other users with near identical damage to #1 exhaust valve.)

The reason for this thread is that most commercial spring compressors do NOT work on this head due to tight clearances and none of them work with the cam shafts in place. The tool skunkworks built allowed VSS to be changed without removing heads/cams/timing belt.

If find a tool for $30 that will do this I will buy two and give you one.

After getting lots of info from clint and starting with a modified version of the 15 dollar tool I made this. (sorry about the bad pictures.) I took a piece of 1/4 inch steel and bent it over as you can see. I then chucked it offset in the laith to bore the foot so it would fit around the valve spring washer.
I then welded the top part on to lengthen it.(mistake) It worked just fine for the front bank but it was too long for the rear. I ended cutting it shorter (where I marked the picture)
the handle I used was pretty much the 15 dollar tool handle. If I get a chance I will take a better picture. This fits between the head and the cam. This is a 2 person tool - one to compress and the other to remove/install keeper. Clints Idea was better as it would clip on the cam - one person tool.

Forgot to add - Car has been running great. Where I would get knock counts as high as 28 I now get a max of 6 really pushing it. Normal driving gets me 0-3 knock counts.

Over all very happy. Now that it has been over 3 months. I would do it again. I have to say with 99% certainty that the vss solved my low load knock problem.
