Default MechMan Alternators

I have searched several sources for high output alternators for our cars. After chasing several dead ends and companies who would not respond to repeated requests, I have finally found a company that will do it.

I spoke with MechMan and they currently build a custom alternator for our car. They do not use the factory housing. Instead they custom build a housing and bracket system that bolts right into the factory location. These housing are larger than the factory housing allowing for larger windings, rectifiers etc... I found a lot of their products on the RX-7 forum, with really high reviews.

The normal output for the alternator is 250amp with 155amps at idle. They are custom building me one that is 200amp with an under drive pulley. I will get better idle amperage without the chance of over winding the alternator when my car hits 8000rpm. The 250amp is fine for factory redline apps according to them. They offer coatings and various upgrades.

The alternator should ship tomorrow, (fully loaded). I will keep you all updated. So far their service has been A-1. They really seem to know there stuff and don't seem to mind taking the time to explain things to you. I am huge on customer service.

I installed the alternator yesterday. This thing kicks ass! At a cold idle (I idle at 1000rpm's because of my cams) I have 14.5 volts. At a warm idle I have 13.8-14.1 volts. The best part is at idle with 2 fans that draw 25 amps each, 2 fans that draw 13 amp each, my head lights on, a/c on, stereo and amps on full the alternator voltage never dips. My factory alternator would dip all the way to 10.5 volts at this point, not this one.

They did a great job. I highly recommend them!

Update us again in a month or two, if you will, to see how its holding up. That will be the true test.

So far I am very happy. Voltage is still right on target. Makes it so much easier to tune with consistent voltage . I have had no issues what so ever.

I believe I paid $449 shipped. If I remember correctly they said the price would be increasing shortly.
