Think about it, if every time you flipped on your brights, you needed to wait for it to warm up, you might not get the bright light you need in time.

I just run HID lo-beams and Silverstar Ultra hi-beams. It works really nicely, and it's cool to see the white-difference.
Since there is no filament with xenon lights, how can the life be shortened by cycling them? Does anyone know this for a fact? My impression is that the xenon lights should last much longer than halogen.

One reason I'm doing the low, high and fog lights is to have a uniform color. IMO, the halogens look soooo yellow next to xenon which isn't to my liking and I was previously using the Silverstar Ultras. It's true the high beams may take a few seconds to be bright and maybe not the best for "flashing" but once on should be incredibly bright for rural roads, etc.

What needs to warm up - the ballast or the xenon gas? If the ballast, maybe I'll relocate them to a warmer part of the engine bay. I guess they will warm up faster in summer than winter?

I plan to finish the H3 fogs this weekend and will post pics.

Ok,
Metal halide bulbs,(Also a HID bulb) like is used in a school Gym, take up to 2 mins. to cycle up to full bright. Metal halide lamp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Another is a bulb used on a LCD computer projector. This is also a HID lamp.

HID is great for light output and power used. Thats why they are so bright, but the down side is the ballast warm up. During the warm up, The color temp will change from blueish to white. It would be hard to turn on a high beam with the same color as a low beam and have them match. You can get a halogen bulb that is colored to a higher color temp and that will make them closer to matching.

I would get just the low beam and you can later add the high or fog/driving light in HID. You will be shocked on how much light you get with the low beam only on a 4300K or 6000K kit. I know the higher color temp kits will give up light output because you are restricting the total range used. Think of it as a speaker and only using the high frequency tweeters in you car.

Thanks, Eldos1.

Unfortunately, I had already bought the 3 sets in 8000k before I read this thread, and have the low & high beams installed in my VR4 and today am removing the bumper to mount the fog light ballasts somewhere. After that I can see if I like the color (I'm now concerned they may be too blue and sacrificing too many lumens compared to cooler temp bulbs). Maybe I'll hate the hgh beams or the 8000K. If that's the case, I already know I can purchase 9006 or H3 replacement bulbs in any color for $15 each from the same vendor, re-use the high beam ballasts in my Stealth DD with new low beam bulbs (probably 4300K) & go back to halogen high beams in the VR4. If later I like the 4300K better, I can easily swap out the 8000K bulbs without breaking the bank.

Sounds like a great product. Please post pics when done. I would like to see the results. If possible aim the lights to a wall (I want to know if they have a small blue/purple tint on the top) and maybe find a very dark alley or place where you can show us the results with low beams, low beam/fog lights, low/high beams+fog lights. For this price it will be very cheap to go hid on my low beams and my fogs. sounds great guys! thank for the wonderful review

OK, I got them installed in my VR4 - I love HID low beams and fog lights, but not sure I like my high beams for the reasons others have posted & will go back to halogen high beams. I also think the 8000K is too blue but not sure yet if bad enough to change them. The 8000K high beam is definitely bluer than the 8000K low beam or fog light.

I'll buy 4300K low beam bulbs for my Stealth, use the high beam ballasts from the VR4 and then will compare & decide.

I don't have any night pictures yet, and have to figure out how to post them.

I just got my kit in, 9006 6000k. Kinda confused (call me stupid) by all the cables. So the bigger connector currently connected to my headlight goes into the ballast, and the cable coming from the ballast hooks to the big cable on the HID bulb? and thats pretty much it, right? are the two smaller connectors stuck through the rubber seal looking thing just for a different kind of setup then ours?? I dont think mine work then....

the life cycle is dependent on the xenon gas. when u look at the bulb, u notice the small round portion is slightly gray or powdery. that's actually from the factory testing the bulb (the little egg looking thing). when the gas is ignited and shut off before it warms up completely, it begins to solidify. if this happens enough times, u end up with is a bulb (the little egg looking thing) that's completely solid gray. when that happens, it's time for a replacement. the ballast is the igniter. it doesn't need a warming up period. it draws current to ignite the bulb. this is a simplified explanation.

Ryan- if the 8000k kit u have isn't enough, u should be able to just buy the 4300k bulbs and not purchase a new kit.

for the people unsure about the warm up time on HID's, it's about 5 seconds max. i'm not sure if it depends on the color of the bulb tho. that's not a very long time and should be sufficient if u need them for dark roads.
