SOHC you in the FACE

Where can I start searching for these. A friend of mine said to just call the places that do the dohc pistons JE, ROSS, Venolia, wiseco.....blah blah and ask them to grind in the sohc valve reliefs instead.
Im very worried about the sohc valve reliefs, because they are cut/formed very deep in the stock caste pistons, and there is very little material left holding the side of the piston in place. I broke off the edge of 5 pistons because there was so little material there. Anyways, I just want some help because Ive never gone piston shopping before. Im looking for stock bore. Im just going to hone the cylinders, and throw the new pistons in with some total seals using a gapless top ring. Hopefully a low tension oil ring also. 8.0:1 Looking to run 15+ psi on pump gas. Damaged the stock pistons at 9 psi because I had the ignition advanced too far. Last edited by Ondontii : 09-10-2005 at 11:26 PM. |

Well, apparently I can get the venolias for $61.50 a piece, just need to mail them my one piston that is still good so they can get the sohc valve reliefs.
Probably need to do some calculations to make sure Im getting the CR I want. $500 with pins and fit isnt bad. Ross was going to cost $590 just for pistons and nothing else. Now Im shopping for some totalseals (top gapless). At least these dont have to be custom. |

Sounds good man. I think your probably the first to do a piston upgrade on the SOHC. Good luck with it!

Well, I just dont think the sohc pistons would hold up to 400whp enviornment no matter how well I had things tuned.
I know of one guy named "chief" who overbuilt his sohc. Ross pistons, Pauter rods (WHY!!!!??!!!) forged crank. his rev limiter is 6200......not sure what the pauter rods are for. I believe there is a sohc 3000gt that has forged pistons.......but is N/A.......not sure why in the world he did that. He has all the RPW goodies. Insane amount of money spent on.........a car that still aint gonna be fast. http://www.3000gt-sohc.com/ |

im having a real pain with the piston pins. Im going to have my piston shipment stalled not because I will have to take all the pistons out now and take them to a machine shop somehow (walk there????) just so I can mail 1 piston to Venolia.

DO NOT SEND THEM ONE FROM YOUR ENGINE!
Go buy a stock piston from the dealership and send them THAT instead. I sent my existing piston from a blown motor to Ross and had them cast to that spec and they all came back a little too small for boost. If your pistons were melted, chances are the 'good' ones are heat shrunk. Safe yourself the hassle of having to rip the engine apart (again) and send them a new OEM piston. Also, the CP pistons for the 3rd gen eclipses will work. I have those in my setup now.

I didnt melt any pistons. I shattered them from detonation. Im quite sure there was no extreme shrinkage. I also found today that cylinder #1 ate its rode bearing. Somehow the Crank journal still looks great (bearing wrapped around it and seems to have protected it). I will plastigauge the crank and have the rod resized. When it comes to building the piston, Im just going to use their own base design for the dohc piston in stock size, and have them cut in the sohc valve reliefs based on the piston I send. Im sure They would rather do that then sit and copy my sohc piston and end up screwing me. It was good to have some friends show up just as I was pulling my bad bearing/conrod. I was mystified. One of them had recently developed rod knock in his SR20 and he was amazed at how good my crank journals still looked compared to his. Hopefully my crank is okay and I can get this thing together in a month. Waiting for pistons is going to suck. Might look into a crank scraper or who knows what else. Learning this stuff is nice, but I really wish I had a beater to drive around. |

Personally, I still think you should buy a stock one and send them that one, but it's your decision.
I'm not saying they'll cast the piston any larger, but it's safer and more precise with a new one than the in-engine one and to me well worth the extra 60 bucks. I too thought that the 'good' piston would be fine. Oh, and my engine went because of detonation too. ![]() At any rate, good luck and post the results. |
