Default Re: My quest to FI *56K no no*

Spent most of the day with the car, though a good portion of the time was spent running back and forth to parts stores to find the right tool I needed. I hate wasting so much time doing that, but it is all part of the game.

On to Transmission work day.

After I got everything apart, thankfully nothing aside from the reverse gear synchro.

Noticeable size difference between the two gear sets.

Though following the rules of Murphy the new gear went on and then decided to no longer slide. So I had to bring out my special tool.

I never said the special tool use is always a good idea.

Well, everything is put back together for the most part, though I've been looking and am getting some conflicting numbers. What are the torque specs for the end gear nuts?

-John

Oh yeah, but at that point I had already been to Orilley's twice. I should have gone a third time.

Yup, I had a thick fold of shop towels to cushion between the sledge and the gear. I didn't even know it broke until I finished tapping it on. Then I cursed... a lot.

So, learn from my mistakes all. I make a lot of them haha

Solid engine mounts help a lot. Maximal FTW. You may also want to look into getting a true LSD. For suspension,Get some form of coilover. Wheels? try to stay atleast 8" wide with a 245 or greater width. Tires? I work at discount tire and alot of tires that people think are great are really not so good. Stay away from nankang, falken (for the most part) and kuhmo. Try General Exclaim UHP's, Goodyear Eagle F1's and BFG KDW 2's. I currently have the Generals but if I were to do it again, I would have Eagle F1's on my car. They are some of the best tires ever....even better than KDW2's IMO. They have a carbon fiber reinforced sidewall and all kinds of goodies. Anyway, that list should put you well on your way to better traction

John, why did you opt to get new gears? Preventative maintenance or what?

For me it's 3SX Poly Motor Mounts, Quiafe LSD, and Yokohama AVS ES300'S Traction it still hard to get but it's pretty livable.

I'm not a fan of solid motor mounts AT ALL. Very bad idea IMO, unless you want to risk extra stress and fatigue on your engine block.

I have KSport coilovers and 245/45/17 Khumo Ecsta ASX's. No traction problems here with a correct launch.
