In all honesty I think most the people breaking their trannies are either a) on old trannies that are going to break or b) abusive.

I've broken parts a few times in mine. I've listed the parts numerious times - not once has my diff been one of them. 162k miles. 22k of that boosted. I put my car through hell every chance I get. I don't buy the "the FWD diff sucks" thing anymore, as I have a pile of broken parts laying next to a perfectly fine diff. I'm getting a quaife soon, and I'm thinking about mounting the diff as a trophy with a "refused to die" plaque.

As for welding the diff - you can't "weld" it. You can put a bead around the pin, but because the two metals are so unlike you could never get the two to weld together without seriously weakening the integrity of the diff casing itself. This was told to me by a close friend whom is a metal fabricator. I had asked him to weld mine and he immediately said it would be worse than leaving it as is. The solution? Pin the pin in place. He used a prick punch and mushroomed the pin on it's edges so it's physically not possible for the pin to pass through the pin hole any longer, while not altering the casing one bit.

My point stands.

The newest of these cars are turning 8 years old. Most of between 12-15 years old, and very rarely do you see one under 100K on the clock. This is OLD. When these cars were designed the average life expectancy of a car was 100K/10 years before major mechanical failures. As we continue to push these cars, and parts continue to age, expect to see more and more parts scattering themselves.

Now I will admit I worded things wrong a bit about the diff. It is weak compared to the rest of the trans in most cases, but I don't think it's the ticking time bomb everyone plays it off as any longer.

Holy hyjack, but a good one. This is info that should be in this thread as people looking at doing this project will read through this thread.

1/5

Yesterday was Tiffany and I's 5 year anniversary.

Also yesterday some parts for the car that had ordered from mentor mitsu back on December 15th finally showed up.

Today, I worked on the car. The car and I have been together for almost 8 years.

I'm still at sort of a stand still until I get my flywheel back. By lunch time today I had my flywheel being resurfaced at Precision Machine (the same place that did my block and heads). My oil pan and down pipe were at Precise Welding, and my Oil cooler was at the radiator shop.

Unfortunetly only the Oil Cooler was finished today and I will have to wait until next week for the flywheel and oil pan/DP.

Installed the nice clean oil cooler, bought some hoses, finished up my oil feed lines and water lines for the turbos. Put on my new stainless steel braiding clutch line and new OEM slave cylinder.

Besides that, have to wait for the flywheel to be finished.

ave a 4 day weekend coming up, school starts back up on Monday, I should be turning the key next weekend. ... I hope.

-John

damn j groove i thought u were finished by now. good luck on finishing it up, im going the 9:1 route too from IPS when money comes around. it seems like all of us are just waiting on the green pieces of paper. and dont listen to everyone bashing the insert, you already know its a bandaid and you plan on replacing it when it goes. you only spent 200 to modify it to last a little longer under the pressure youll be putting on it. If you get an extra couple months out of it then its worth it. i know mine wont last forever when im done, and i have the same plan on going to a TT one when mine blows. But why fix something that isnt broken. compared to everything else, doing a tranny swap is cake.

the best mod to get for the 3/s if you plan on modding...is a DD 03 saturn vue ftw

I would have thought I would have been finished by now as well.
Oh well, I'm back on track now.

Thanks Jay, thanks Brian.

I got my parts back from the welders yesterday, flywheel should be ready on Monday so I can pick it up after my classes.
