Okay, I tried searching for information on how to do the turbo set-up on this forum but for some reason I can't find it.. or it wouldn't find any results.. how much exactly does it cost to do such an upgrade to a 1999 SL 5-speed? I was wondering.. I love my car but it sure does lack power.. =[

If you have to ask, then you shouldn't be doing it. Expect around $2K for the initial install (if you're doing it yourself, otherwise triple that for a shop), and then expect to spend many hours replacing broken parts, odd tuning issues, and various other things that come with a modded car. I had just of $2K into putting mine together, and if I had paid retail for all the repairs and additional things I've put on since (upgrades and repairs directly related to boost) I would easily have another $3K into the car since (2 years, 21K miles). If YOU (as in no one else) aren't willing to learn a whole hell of a lot about your car, get under the hood and get dirty, bloody, and really pissed off, and able to understand EFI at least a little then walk away from here now. This isn't something you can just bolt-on and everything is happy and the car drives like it was stock - because it won't... ever. Driveline parts break, fuel goes wonky, the car will have mood swings (where everything feels like shit for no reason). I could go on. Power comes at a severe price, and there's no tag on it. Will that be cash or credit?

acidbath, first off, beautiful car man!
![]() Secondly, Jeremy speaks the truth, I started seriously reading and buying parts last December. The main reason I have not done my conversion yet is I'm still buying parts. The more research I do the more I find out what I need to do this safely and reliable. I also have a good friend helping me on this that has been bugging me to hurry it up. Why? he knows what he is doing and knows a lot about forced induction, me on the other hand, I'm still learning and I do not just want my friend to build me my car, I want to do it with him assiting me. Because she is my car, and I need to know how it all works. The bare bone basic parts needed to TT your car can be had for around $1,300, but after you really start thinking about it you will end up with closer to $2,000 in parts. There are some great threads on this board and some awesome people that will help you out along the way. My best recommendation, read, read, and read some more. My time table has been pushed forward due to my clutch going out so I'm doing my TT conversion a bit earlier than I was planning, my only hope is that I have read enough. Good luck, and great looking car. -John

Thanks a lot J-Groove. All I've ever been doing is reading, I know it's not simple and I know it's going to be expensive.. but that's about it though, that's all I know for now. I'm not really into a rush when trying to force-induct my car right now, when money starts coming in, I'll think of the best way to get around to adding more power. For now, it's just got the regular components on it - Full exhaust system, TEIN Flex[I was the prototype car they used in order to make suspension parts for the Flex type coil-overs], and an intake. Other than that.. I just have those exterior mods. But yeah, thanks for the information, I'll just have to wait for now. It's good to know that a lot of people already have their n/a models turbo'd.

![]() My car doubles as a Red Cross blood donation center when it's time to get my hands in there and working. It doesn't matter what it is - she has tasted blood and is now insatiable. I hate to sound condescending in my posts when it comes to "How much/how long/what to expect?" threads but I'm only trying to give it as realistically as I can. Yes, there's many of us that have done this, and at the same time there's many that still don't understand all there is about what they've done. I like to think I've got a pretty good handle on what I'm doing with my car, but I'm still learning, and still seeing new things that I didn't even think possible with my own car. I'm just about ready to sign-up for one of the efi-101 classes that you can find scattered about the US just so I can get a better grasp on just wtf I'm doing with a fuel controller (because I really don't have an intimate knowledge of what I'm doing outside of watching AFR and EGT). Once you get into heavy modding (which this is) you are going to be going through a very steep learning curve, and if you fail to keep up with it your car is going to pay, and we all know that our cars like to pass the bill to us, every time. ![]() So sorry if I come off sounding harsh or like an asshole. Hopefully anyone that reads my tirades can pull something usefull from them and can use it to not repeat some of the mistakes I've made and helped others with. |
