Before Mitsu moved to the 4G63T and 6G72TT the Starion G54B 2.6L four used a single overhead cam and timing chain. The new designs in 88 89 90 were an upgrade.

I'm dealing about a StarQuest right now. Engine was rebuilt and started. Timing chain had been stretched in rebuild process, needs replaced now.
Some rock solid SOHC workhorse motors can go a long time with them, but 2 valves per cylinder & don't rev high. High output & high top end motors move to belt systems.

Wiki: timing chains:
"While chains and gears may be more durable, rubber belts are quieter in their operation (In most modern engines the noise difference is negligible.), are less expensive and are mechanically more efficient when compared with a gear or chain system."

And in that context ONLY more durable on a SOHC engine with a short chain, not revving too high. DOHC high revving motor and its no question, the belt is the upgrade.

Something just needs to be upgraded about our tensioneer system.

There's a guy selling solid tensioners right now, well pre-selling them.

The dumbshit hasnt been on since Feb 5. Hes been around since Nove 04 and has 21 posts. I dunno why anyone is wasting their time in this thread. LOL People have already posted why a timing chain is a bad idea on a high revving dohc.

Ummmm....BMW would disagree with you on that:

Good enough for 8,300+ with a warranty.

But, too expensive and pointless to do on these motors as a retrofit.

Yeah german cars also make you hold the wheel while you put the bolts through it....

I'm sure they'd agree those are better too....

I'm sure they'd also agree to making cars with an odd bolt pattern for no good reason

I don't support germans...

I want some of you people arguing for timing chains to hold a timing chain and a kevlar belt in each hand, think of all the difference even a few pounds of rotating mass makes in an engine, then tell me that a timing chain is better.

exactly... dumbest idea ever... is everyone smashing valves? If you are you didnt build your engine correctly... or you let your timing belt go too long.

Retrofitting a 6g72 with a chain? Probably not worth it the hassle... but...

TBelt > TChain for a DOHC engine? Uh, no...

Each design has advantages, but there are many DOHC Tchain based OEM engines out there... for example, I've been considering an M45 which has a VK45 engine...
