Hello from the UK!
I am currently doing a full rebuild on my 92 GTO TT and as part of the upgrade path I am planning on replaceing the standard rods with either Pauter or Crower rods. There is much debate on GTOUK wether the standard rods are as strong or even stronger than aftermarket rods, but as we are still quite virginal in the big bhp stakes I thought you guys could help answer the question... I am planning to get to 800BHP as this is what my reg plate says, I think I have the upgrade path quite well sorted but I want a bomb proof engine and money isn't too much of a concern but obviously isn't unlimited. Has anyone acheived good reliable power from aftermarket rods? I have read on your site that 800BHP seems possible on the standard bottom end but how long did or will it last...? I am putting Wiseco pistons and a forged crank in with a full stage 3 heads and I want to give myself the best basis for reliable power, are aftermarket rods worth the way forward? Many thanks in advance Mark |

Your engine sounds so radical that absolutely go with aftermarket, new stuff is new stuff and thats something you wish for the most critical single part inside your engine. The rods take the beating.

On the other hand, I think Jack T. is still running stock rods and hasn't broken one yet with 750+ HP at the wheels.
Not that beefy rods aren't good insurance, but...

Shot peened stock rods are pretty damn tough... (like 20-25% stronger) I think they could handle it, I haven't seen hard numbers to prove otherwise, just my opinion though. But if you got money, go for it... though I don't think it's 100% needed.

Stock rods are forged. Shot peen them to releive the surface cracks/tension. This will give you a strong rod and save lots of money. How many stock OEM rods have you ever heard of snapping or bending? Not many.

I literally tore a rod in half on stock turbos. No signs of detonation on the piston, but the rod twisted 90 degrees and then sheared in half in the middle. I put aftermarket rods in my new engine.
