So, from the way it looks, your transfer case must be completely full of oil??? The only problem I see with this is the potential for great leakage later on. When the seals are young, they'll keep the fluid in just fine, but as things age, they don't quite do their job so well anymore. I always thought the seals were intended to seal oil splashing and sloshing rather than submersion. The center diff output shaft from these cars' transmissions is a contradiction to this, since it must be submerged at proper fluid level.
On everything else in any car, proper fluid level brings the fluid level just to the bottom of the seals.

Negative, it has the correct amount of fluid in it.

We discovered this after a day at the track. We'd get home and find the t-case 2/3 of the way empty from spec levels. We had new seals, not any big signs of oil on the drive shaft, so we refilled the t-case, installed a camera under the car and went back to the track. To our surprise at high speeds the overflow nipple was where it was coming out. With this reservoir in place it gives it somewhere to go, then can drain back into the t-case.

So you don't store extra oil in the reservoir, correct? You just let it 'blow out' up the tube into the reservoir and then drain back.

I like it and will install one on the race car and maybe my street car too as she occasionally sees triple digit speeds.

Good idea with the vent, seems the way to go. I`ll be re-sealing mine anyway, may opt to fill it higher than stock.

Interesting. I will keep an eye on mine for fluid loss out the breather. I wouldn't imagine that much fluid would come out up there, but if you're saying your resevoir is getting fluid into it, and then is pouring back down, there would be a substancial leak out of that breather for sure, and then the obvious problem results.

I am very anal about cars leaking fluids. All but one of my cars leaks a drop a week if any at all, and I keep it that way.

wow that's very fascinating. I'm sure now this is the problem I have been having with both the tranny AND transfer case. I love you fix. Its going on my list. Have any pics of the engine bay part?

Weekly checking of the t-case oil is tough. I work at Jiffy Lube and still have a hard time checking my fluids. But one thing that might make it easier is to just go to a jiffy lube and make them check it. We check and top off fluids for free all day. It doesn't take too long either.

I have yet to have gone to a "jiffy lube" and Not had them mess something up. No offense as I would feel fine about having a fellow member like yourself do it... but 99.9999% of those places don't give a flying fuck about you or your car, and will only do what is totally convenient to them. Overtighten drain bolts. crossthread.. install wrong oil. overtighten oil filters. Do a totally different job then the one I asked for. Joyrides. Hell they couldn't even drive my car into the garage.. they kept killing it so I had to do it. And did you see that news video about them?

It's been a long time since anyone but me or my friend and fellow member Rick Pierce have touched my car.

sorry about my off topic rant.. but seriously.. that is terrible advice

can I just put something out there on this one...are we 100% certain that filling the transfer case to the very top is what mitsubishi intented? do other transfer cases run the same way?

where I'm going with this, is if you over fill it, is it going to be spinning fast enough at these high speeds to be frothing up the oil and that's why it's being pushed out the overflow cap? anyone with the CAD drawings on the transfer case know exactly what level the oil would be at when filled with exactly what mitsubishi recommend?

I love the whole fluid level sensor, that's uber, even better would be level and oil temperature, going even further how about tempteratures on ALL the oil places..(gear box...rear diff, trans etc etc) you might need to "shape" a spot for your sensor though so as going around corners does not give false empty's...
