Default Remote oil resevoir for TC?.

Having just read the thread on a destroyed transfer case due to lack of lubrication, and the amount of TC`s that seem to let go; plus the official recall from Mitsubishi it seems something needs to be done to prolong the life of the TC.

Checking the oil weekly is a good idea but it`s a pain in the arse to do, plus due to the small amount of oil in there even a minor leak can be fatal to the TC in a short period of time.

I`ve been thinking along the lines of a remote tank to allow more oil capacity, and be a lot easier to check the level on. You could run a fill (and vent line) into the engine bay and have it relatively easily accessible for checking, plus if the system held 1l of oil there would be less chance of a minor leak wreaking the TC.

Other option is to have a fill and vent line tapped into the gearbox, so the TC is supplied with gearbox oil, same again 2.5l oil in system is a lot better than only 300cc..

Anyone have any ideas on this?.

what im wondering is how do we stop the transfercase from over filling itself if we incorporate a reservoir in the engine bay.

What we would need here is a TC low level warning indicator. I just don't see how that could be acomplished but if anyone has ideas post.

Low level indicator would be nice, bit I don`t know how you`d be able to do that, as for the oil level being higher up I`m going to have a look into that, if the vent was also higher you could effectively fill the TC case (don`t know if a full TC is good or bad idea though) and vent into the resovior.

It`s just an idea to pick over at the moment.

I have a low oil level indicator. I just don't have a good way to mount it in the transfercase. IT is an electronic sensor that when it is not covered in oil it makes a warning buzz or lights a light.

The threads on the oil drain an fill is something weird like 18x1.25MM?? You can put a banjo bolt on the drain plug and a straight fitting on the fill hole and you now have an way to hook up a remote reservior

The biggest thing would be limiting oil flow into the TC so it wouldn’t overfill.

You have to keep the reservior the same height as the transfer case.

Yes you would, but that would sort of defeat the purpose of it being easily accessible. It could still be more accessible than the TC itself though. Maybe locate it on the front cross member . . .

Had a poke about under the car and it would be a tight fit to run the lines, can be done though, also found I`d lost 100ml (a 3rd!) of the TC oil, it`s Shockproof Heavy as well so quite thick..

Never noticed any red oil stains at work or home where I park it.

Also noticed the fill and level bungs aren`t that far off height wise.

I've had a reservoir on my TC for years. One thing to note, over 120~ish in these cars will start to empty the TC. I installed a reservoir in the engine bay, connected it with some AN line and fittings. I can pull of the track and find ounces of fluid in the res, it then drains back into the t-case.
