Jumping on this thread. I have a 96 VR4 and looking for a datalogger that can monitor knock.
This is an extremely long thread so i apologize if these questions have been asked before. Are there any connection issues with the 96 ECU? Also, does the software work OK with windows Vista?

A learning ECU will basically take volatile, short term memory to learn to adjust things slightly to try to hit a target A/F, etc. When the battery is unplugged, it's gone from memory. You also can't overwrite or change any of this; it's the way the ECU handles the actual map settings it's receiving from the tune itself. In your case, since the car was probably almost stalling constantly from running VTA, it will try to adjust A/F in that load area, until it stops or reduces the stalling. But, if you disconnect your battery for a few minutes, it should go right back to running like crap. IIRC the 99 ECU IS indeed flashable, but is very cost prohibitive since they are so small in number and would require special software as well. A flashable ECU will let you adjust timing, air/fuel ratio, idle rpms, fan speed settings, and more. The flashable evo ECU has been hacked to even add no-lift-to-shift (NLTS), a valet mode (RPM can't exceed a specific user-set value), etc. It completely eliminates the need for a piggyback system; think of it as almost an AEM built into the car. ![]() Now, that said, it's what I know based off the flashable EVO ECU; but I'm relatively sure it would be the same for the 3S world (or any other platform). I have been able to use it to connect to my evo under Vista without any issues. ![]()

That would be great if you can get someone to flash ours.

A GM master tech was talking to me sat night at a car show, he has a wrx, he was saying there's a good chance that we may have a similar ecu as the eclipses that proceeded us after 99. And that there should be a flash that will work, im trying to get some answers on openecu.org

I'm not sure what a 99 ECU sells for, but you'd have to add that to the price of the flashing software / hardware. Not to mention, adding in a flashing port (where the white part of the tactrix cable would plug), and, IIRC, the 99 ECU has a slightly different pin config (at least for wiring an AEM?) than the previous years. There's something like 287 authentic 99's out there ... a VERY small market to say the least.
![]() If the cost approaches AEM territory, I think an AEM would be better as it has individual cylinder management, 2-step launch control, etc that the stock ECU isn't capable of. However, I'd love to see some tech advances for the platform. ![]() |
