From my understanding. The 3\S ECU's are not reprogrammable or flashable. So either cable will work, but the open port cable would be useless to us, Unless you have a buddy with an EVO :P

Pretty sure the 98/99 ECU's are writeable, just nobody has attempted to do anything with them.

I did some research on the forums, but all I can find is people saying that it *should* be possible to reflash the 97-99 ECU. I found an old thread where shiver said he had looked into the subject of writing a program for flashing our ECU's ( Has anyone installed an S-AFCII in a 98/99 VR-4? ), so I sent him a PM about it. Hopefully he may chime in on the subject........ This would be a great option for us 3g people now that this cable is available.

Agreed. It would be nice to know.

And im sure its common knowledge by now that my understandings aren't always the truth :P

Also, would there be a way to back up the ECU default data incase you get too far into unchartered waters?

I'm trying to get this in by V-day. Hopefully my GF will come through, I will order the open port cable as well.

from what i remember you could only change code to adjust things like how long your lights stay on after you close the door, lights blinking when you use the security system, and some other small things. Supposedly dealerships could do this with their system. But if it turns out we can than theres more of a reason for me to buy that 98 vr-4

98/99 ECUS ARE writable. There is just not enough of them for me to deal with the software to do something for them.

Will my sad face convince you of doing something for them?

sad face or not, if you look at the production numbers and the amount of money i have to spend to do it, i would lose money.

I see where you are coming from on this. With just over 1,000 97-99 VR-4's that were produced, there can't be all that many of them still running the roads today and even less that are being modded. Still though, there are those of us that would like to be able to reprogram our 97-99 ECU's. This is more than likely going to have to be an open source kind of thing if it is pursued. I know I am definitely going to delve deeper into this subject....... Maybe the EVO guys can provide us with a little help.
