Never enough BOOST!
|
Hats off to Innovator!
This free mod has drastically improved my performance under WOT. Granted the weather is getting colder here in the Chicagoland area so I'm sure the combination is working great! My butt dyno is telling me that the car is pulling a whole lot faster! I've had absolutely no idling problems; no hi or low throttle problems either! Until I pulled the BAT fuse. The only problem is when I'm decelarting to a stop and the car dies on me....so I simply tap the gas pedal to rev up the motor before I stop. Any ideas on a quick fix? If not....no biggie........I can deal with that. As Innovator recommended, I pulled the BAT fuse to reset the ECU..........but that's when I noticed more of a problem when decelaration to a stop........the car dies when I finally reach a stop. So I'm not sure I'll pull that BAT fuse again. Otherwise, before I pulled that BAT fuse, the car ran great with this free mod (3 honecombs removed). Now I'm contemplating on Innovator's last recommendation to pull the main/center Honeycomb out. I may do that sometime this weekend and will post an update. If I remove this last honeycomb, do I have to richen (+) my low throttle 1,000 rpm level by another 10% or lean (-) it out more ?? Just wanted to post and thank Innovator for a great recommendation!! Hopefully I'll hit the AWD dyno soon and will post some results with various MAS runs (stock w/ honeycombs, 3 honeycombs gutted, and all 4 gutted out).........should be interesting results!! I'm hoping for 425+ awhp !! Peace.

Ahmed, you would have to richen it up if you take the middle one out. Actually riching up our 1000 rpm now might stop your stalling when comming to a stop. Try it and see.

btw, it's a '92 VR4 and I have no means of monitoring my a/f ratios (No pocketlogger or datalogger yet). I tune with the S-AFC and an EGT gauge (probe is located in rear exhaust manifold towards runner#1 ).
Once I hit the dyno or get a pocketlogger/datalogger........i'll post results. |

My findings:
With all honeycombs removed & ECU reset, the car may stall from de-acceleration. After driving the car some more, the stalling happened less frequent. I guess the ECU had some time to learn. The car was in this configuration only for a couple hours before I said forget it. Definately not a daily driven mod. I re-installed all my honeycombs in again to see if it would get rid of my annoying 3000 rpm low throttle stutter. Well, it did soften the stutter, but the original problem is still there. But now for the biggest shocker. With those honeycombs present, my car feels incredibly laggy. It feels like I just upgraded to a larger laggy turbo. I can't believe how slow my car feels. Looks like I'll be going back to the gutted configuration (3 honeycombs only) again. |

As long as your friend has an SAFC or SAFR he could benefit. Without it it won't idle for shit and wont run well.
PS: Something interesting I remember now. Before I did the honecomb removal the best I got at the track was 13.9 @ 99. Since the removal and some better tuning it improved to 13.2 @ 105. Mind you the wheather was a little better but I do credit some of my improvement to the gutted MAS. I think the improved spool between shifts and better overall flow helped me snag a couple MPH. the Intake system is really holding me back at the moment. I feel this a damn good track mod if anything.

Mods are in sig, Last night I gutted my MAF, took out all screens but center. When I started it, ran like shit. I then hooked up datalogger and tuned my idle (1000 rpms) so that my oxygen feedback trim was right in the middle (something like +15% at idle) i then cruised at 2k, 3k,4k rpm doing the same. I copied my 4k setting for 5k 5.5k,6k and 7k (right around -7%). I then turned my dsbc R to the OFF setting (7psi), and copies my low settings to my high settings. I then did 3rd gear pulls, slowly increasing boost until I got knock counts where I then richened up where i got knock until I had 0 knock count. Ended up getting to 1.33 bar with 0 knock and didnt feel like pushing the stock turbos any higher. They pull like a freight train, timing isnt so low (20-35 before), now 30+ at LEAST, and hold .95 bar to redline. Car is alot faster then before the mod.

I hated to do it but I had to go back to honeycombs.. light load cruising was just too much of a clutch dance(to keep it from bucking etc.)... I am fully motivated to get some type of upgraded MAS now though because it sure did add some power that I HATE to give up.
