It is not uncommon for high compression and turbocharged engines to gain as much as 40 wheel horsepower with the addition of an airpump.
Is anyone else having a REALLY hard time taking that seriously? hahaha

I'm liking the idea of a vacuum pump, though...

ditto.. in my head it's all about what the pump can do for keeping the oil out of combustion.. if it increases power it would be a bonus AND a surprise to me.

Oh, I forgot to mention... Fans=tiny pressure gradient... (so, uh, they're useless) without a doubt we'd need a pump... just figured I should outright say that, before someone says "what about the fan idea?"

Actually NO.

"ProStock cars use electric pumps. NHRA realizes the added HP potential and ruled that Stock Eliminator can’t use anything other than a PCV valve and SuperStock is only allowed to use the exhaust evac system."

Realize this:
To make power the piston has to be forced down by the combustion event. Imagine a large spring underneath the piston which tries to keep the piston from moving down. This is what positive crankcase pressure does. It is a large resistance force against the piston's downward movement. Remove this force and you free up HP. It's very simple. Known fact, and in FI cars is even more critical.

The reason I believe there is smoke (here's my theory part) is because there is no vacuum in the crankcase to suck on the oil over the valve stem seals. As you know, our shitty valve stem seals leak. Well they leak when oil seeps past the seals, travels down the valve shaft, and into the combustion chamber. The oil then burns and creates smoke. You need vacuum in the crankcase to suck the oil on the valve stem seals away and not let it seep down the valve shafts.
I installed a new PCV valve yesterday (non-OEM; Purolator), reverted the setup back to stock design, and the smoking stopped.

Thanks for your opinion.

For Affordability, I have found in my research many many people sucessfully using a Cambel Housefeild, or other Compressor name brand Air/Water seperator filter which can be had at lowes or HD for under $20.

Thoughts?

I think it is a good idea as long as we are rerouting back to the engine.. until we upgrade to this pump, then we won't need it. I use one for my front catch can, but removed the filter as I thought it would clog the flow (it is small). but there are better ones out there. like this:

This is all starting to sound like a really good idea... one of those mods everyone is going to want to do... This seems especially great for a tired old engine, righ?

So how should it go?
Crank Case-----> Catch Can -----> Vac Pump ----> Atmosphere?
not so sure if we'd want to vent the pump to the atmosphere, but where else would we vent it? I might go ahead and try this out... Are there any risks?
-Taylor

Edit:
Here's an informative page: http://www.diabolicalperformance.com...kcaseevac.html
A good point they make there is not to pull too much vacuum, it can suck oil off of the bearings... something we don't want.
I'm still looking for an affordable pump... searching for "Crankcase Evacuation" seems to give some good results...
Also, I'm wondering if this really would help with power... it would be easier to move the firing piston down, but harder to move all the other pistons back up...
Edit again.
I just realized that the volume of air underneath the pistons should never change... as one moves down, another one moves up, so the air is just being moved, but never compressed... Therefore the air is not acting like a spring, just some light mass to move. Adding a vacuum would still help pull the piston down, but like I said I'm not sure if that would help since another piston would be fighting to move up at the same time.
