Default 6g72 Oil Pump

So, i guess its time this thread is made and dedicated to the discussion of the problems that have been issued lately.

What all is known about this and we can compare contrast in here?

I have yet to have one explode, but i have seen atleast 3 or 4 (brought to my attention in the SnakeSkinner thread) of this disaster.

At what HP levels is this happening..?
My oil pump was leaking and I don't know from where and what was causing it...
So now that you mention it, it could be an oil pump fail..

I have a possible oil pump failure on a brand new pump as well. I have to pull it tonight to verify.

I'll ask this and I know there are others wondering the same thing. I'm doing a rebuild....do I keep the oil pump that's in the car now (94k w/perfect pressure) or throw in a new oem pump?

I would install a new one... or you must be a slave of a good oil pressure gauge, cause you will be watching more than the speedo or tach...!!
Install a new one or an oil pressure gauge with headups display..

while some may not like this...

I have to add that we have never had an oil pump failure in our race cars or customer/personal cars.

Makes ya think though...are we just lucky? Do we get a different batch of pumps from mitsu? or is it something else?

That makes absoulty no sense. I have great oil pressure now at idle/cruise/wot (18/50/140psi) reading from my Defi gauge. If I put a new one in I'd be more paranoid now then ever. The new ones seem to be failing, not so much the orginal one int he car.

Remember, you are doing a rebuilt, and you don't know how much wear&tear is in your oil pump... unless you open it and check it out, for the condition of the gears.

That's easiely done no?

Oil pump
Tip clearance 0.03 - 0.08 (0012 - .0031) Limit 0.35 (0138)
Side clearance 0.04-0.10 (.0016- .0039)
Body clearance 0.10 - 0.18 (0040 - .0070)

And if I get a new one I won't know if it's prone to premature failure.....Seems like a Catch 22.

I never thought I'd be worried about installing new parts, but this forum is sure making me doubt myself...

<--- just did 120k, and all this talk of sucky tensioners, and shitty oil pumps makes me a little nervous... Oh well, it's done, they should be fine. I hope.
