Default Ticking Motor...annoying!

I’ve been having a ticking noise over the past few months which lead me to believe it was the lifters. After reading the forums and finding the SOHC does not have lifters I have been trying to figure out what it was.

The ticking sounds like it's coming from the oil pan. Some days the ticking is very quiet, almost unnoticeable. Other days, it’s embarrassing when you stop at a red light. The ticking does not get louder as you rev the motor. The regular engine noise over-powers it after about 1.5k RPM’s. I have already tried an oil flush and holding the RPM’s at 3k, 4k, etc. Please help me!

If you have a 5 speed, it could be the throwout bearing. My car was doing the same thing, started out kinda quiet, and gradually got much louder.

My car is an atx sohc and is doing the same thing. I did an oil change and used Seafoom right before the oil change. It made the tick go away for a while. But 3 months later its back. I don't think it has to do with the tranny if both a mtx and an atx have the problem. Unless they are different problems that sound the same. Does your ticking start softly then get progressively loader over the next few seconds then stop then starts the whole process over? Mine keeps doing this over and over. It almost always takes the same amount of time between starting soft, getting loud, then stopping. Its wierd.

I really need to find the time to install parts I buy

Edit: Finally found time to install some parts, but not all.

I have an ATX. Yes, some days it varies in tone (low to high like you said) while it idles from one second to the next…but it’s very inconsistent. I'm pretty sure it's the motor though since no noise comes from the passenger side where the trans is actually at.

Today, as an example, I started it up (morning temp’s around 20-30 degrees) and I had no ticking from initial startup all the way to work. I got off of work and there was still no ticking, but I noticed when I pulled up to my house the ticking was loud as hell.

Seafoam isn't meant to be ran in the engine for long, it thins the oil out quickly which it even recommends shorter oil changes if using it.

I just changed my oil yesterday and decided to add a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) and drove it today, super quiet even after keeping the revs high on the freeway which usually makes them click like hell!! Its avail at most auto part stores. I've only heard good stuff about it!

That is exactly what mine does, and it is an ATX SOHC. My 1995 Plymouth has the same engine, but never had that problem. Could it be related to the diameter of the oil paths in the engine? I may be off base here, but I remember reading that somewhere around that time, they switched from 1mm to 3mm oil paths because of oil delivery problems. Again, that could be very incorrect.

The SOHC engine is very prone to oil leaks...this "ticking" most of you are describing is due to your engine getting low on oil. This explains why the ticking goes away right after an oil change. So my advice is either fix your oil leaks(very good idea) or check your oil level often(should do this anyway).

Don’t confuse me with a guy that has not maintained an engine and is all of the sudden getting this ticking. I change my oil every 3000 miles regardless with Mobil 1 0w-40 in the winter and 10w-40 in the summer. I do not have any oil leaks and have even played with changing the brand of oil I use as well as different viscosities. None of it makes a difference.

I have even taken off my valve covers. I do not see any sludge buildup so as far as I can tell oil it getting around the engine. Is there a way to increase or switch to 3mm oil paths as “Porbund” was talking about? Can anyone verify this stuff?

I also do my regularly scheduled oil changes and still have the same problems. I also know you aren't suppose to leave Seafoom in for a prolonged period of time. I put it in before the oil change, ran it for about 15-20 minutes then did the oil change. Previous oil changes left me with a minor ticking. Seafoom made it go completely away for a short while. But Its back. I also have no visible oil leaks and check my oil regularly.
