Okay, I've searched the forums for awhile now and I can't find a simple diagram or instructions for setting the timing on an engine that was previously out of time. It's a 1991 NA DOHC. I bought it when it was running very poorly (but running, nonetheless) and I'm trying to fix it. I'm thinking it just jumped time so I've bought all new timing belt components, but like I said, I can't find any straightforward info on how to set the timing, and all the manuals for a 91 appear to have no good information available. Someone please help!

That's more to do with adjusting the ignition timing for performance. I'm looking to actually get the cams in time to put the timing belt on. That calls for having the engine already running prior, and that is where I'm lacking...the cams have been turned and I don't know how far. This will involve finding top dead center and lining up timing marks in some shape, form, or fashion, I just don't know what marks to line up where, etc.

The stealth316 60k page only gives info assuming it was in time before you removed the original timing belt. There are some marks on the camshaft sprockets, (I think 2 each) and there are what look like alignment notches on the valve covers, and there is a TDC angle marking on the timing belt cover for the crankshaft pulley, but where does it all come together? The camshaft sprockets will only hold in place in one of 3 places each and the crankshaft will stop pretty much anywhere, and it doesn't appear that any of the marks on the rear sprockets line up with the notches on the valve covers, so I'm assuming that when one side lines up, the other side is in an intermediary positon, but since the steatlh316 page says that the sprockets will stay in place when the belt comes off, then I must be messed up somewhere. Anyone have any other links or suggestions? Or if you can recommend where to get a downloadable factory service manual before Friday, it should be able to tell me what I need to know. Thanks for the current and future help guys.

Cant get there from here!

The dots on the front sprocket should be at about 2:00, and the rear at about 10:00. There is also a triangle on the valve cover behind the sprocket that the dot on the sprocket should line up with. On the rear bank this is harder to see, but the marks are there.
All this happens with the #1 cylinder at TDC. Hope this clears it up. -SP

Since each sprocket can rotate about one tooth in either direction and it needs to be exact, maybe someone with a perfectly timed engine could line it up in this fashion and take a few pics?
