400 bucks is cheap if there is a warrenty with it, the Problem I have with used motors is, its only a matter of time before that one craps out too... although thats the cheapest way to go. a basic rebuild is about 1000-2000

well the motor has no waranty and its not really used the guy has put new pistons rods crank had the cylinders honed and i belive he said new valves and valve guides all i would have to buy is an oil pump, oil pan and a gasket kit and put it all back togeher.

I bought a 94 VR4 with 115K for $6200 about 2 weeks ago. At the time i thought it was a good deal until 3 days later when i heard a kind of knocking noise coming from the engine. I brought it in to a dealer and they said the timing belt has jumped time. They said my valves must be bent because they couldnt even replace the timing belt it was so bad. They still havent taken off the heads to look at the extent of the damage because he said its gonna cost me $800 just to take off my heads and look at my valves...as of right now this very moment the car starts and will run and is even drivable the runs very noisily and with lots of power loss. Dont worry im definetly not driving it. What should i do? Get my valves replaced and risk finding more damage or just buy a new engine for $4000 and be safe????? Im strapped for cash, I just bought the car!!

If the pistons are still ok, you can get the heads fixed for about $250 if there is only 2-4 bent valves. If you know how to take the heads off and replace them yourself, it makes this very cheap. Might as well do a 120K while you're there

To the OP, look at your oil and see if there is any bearing material. If there is not, your noise may just be from the valves.

Im definetly not a mechanic so how hard is it to take off the heads? I mean i didnt really look at it and if its gonna save me this much money its definetly worth looking at then. The guy at the mitsubishi dealer said it might be cheaper just to buy a used engine but like he said we dont know the extent of the damage till after we rip off ur heads and look which is supposedly gonna be $800. Thanks for the advice ill definetly take a look if i could potentially save my engine!
