How much is this going to cost me?? Arm/Leg, Second Morgage?
I bought myself a set of 99 (big bore) lifters from 3sx and i need them installed... I for one cannot do it. I have looked up the how to and I WILL screw something up so I turned to my dad who owns a GM dealership in town and he or his mechanics will not touch it because it is "rice". So....Dealership time.
What is a dealership going to realistically charge to install the lifters and a new oil pan. While they are at it I might have them install some solid mount motor mounts.....
I would call the dealership but , i want i real world price, they are going to tell me some bullshit guess. Also are they even reliable....with the car being so old are they going to f**k it up and not do it right?
My goals with this fix are to know i can rev to 7k and not blow up lol and to get rid of that G*d D**N F*****ing Piece of S**t TICK!..... It drive me insane .... [/Rant]
Re: How much is this going to cost me?? Arm/Leg, Second Morgage?
replacing the lifters is simple.. i heard you can lift the rocker arm up with a screwdriver, or some sort of prying device, and you can take them out no problem.
To install the new ones, you have to prime them first before you put them in... in the service manual it says prime them in diesel fuel, but i feel more comfortable priming them in actual oil, which is what they'll be exposed to lol.
To prime them, you just stick a pin like object, through the bore, and theres a little ball bearing valve, you just push it down, and let the lifter take in all the oil as it releases air. Next you decompress the lifter, squirting the oil out, and you do that repeatedly about 4 or 5 times.
Its not THAT hard.. you just gotta have a CAN DO attitude, and have a little knowledge of cars, thats all.

Yeah, dealerships cost a lot, and I have had a terrible experience with them. Everyone thinks, "Oh, they must know how to fix it because they sell it." Wrongo. Some of my good buddies are freelance mechanics that used to work at dealerships, until the dealership told them to fix something shoddily to save money, or just not pay them the right amount for the job.
Installing an oil pan isnt hard. Theres a ton of guides, and most importantly, the manual. If you learn to wrench your own car you will save a ton of money in the long run.
And, it is NOT rice. Unless you put a fart cannon, and other stupid stuff, its not rice. Id like to consider the 3S more like Japanese Muscle. Mine sounds like it with a Flowmaster
Re: How much is this going to cost me?? Arm/Leg, Second Morgage?
For the most part a dealer is not going to charge that much. They will pull the numbers from the book. This is such a simple task and does not take long with proper tools. And for the most part. If you Dad's dealer ship did not want to do it, you must have pissed them off. It is not because this car is rice. Most all companies by now have engines just like these and they are called world motors. Yes, even Chevy has world motors, just like these. I would also say, do not shy away from other Jap shops to do this job. Call Nissan, issusu, and your local honda race shops. Every city has one of those. I bet you can get it done for $200ish, if you just don't wish to tackle it your self. It's a good time to do plugs, wires, valve cover gaskets and tube seals while they are at it. Don't let them tell you they have to pull the cams to do it. Go elseware. If you like, I can mail you a CD that shows how I do it.

I bought a new hood release from the dealership for 35 bucks, and they quoted me $125 to install it. Its 2 bolts and a cable, easily accessible once you open the hood. My wheel speed sensor went out, the dealership wanted 175 for the part, and wanted something like $300 to install it. I found a good one at the junkyard for 4 bucks and bolted it in, in like 15 min. My buddy with a GTP said that the wires on his wheel hub pulled out of the harness, so all you have to do is get a new harness and solder some wires, but the dealership wanted around 900 to replace the whole wheel hub. This is all coming from a Ricart dealership around here, so maybe they are just expensive. (The guy at the Mitsubishi parts counter told me that I needed to go to the Nissan desk, because Nissan makes cars that start with numbers, like 300z, 240sx. I really hope he was kidding, but I shook my head and walked out.)
I thought there was a guide on how to install new lifters on 3si. Or, you know, you can just use the manual... If you were in Ohio, I know a few good mechanics that have worked on several 3S's from the Ohio chapter.

Do you know if they are in upper ohio? I would drive to them if they are there....what would they charge as a guesstimate.
I read the guide but i just feel as if i would mess up.... Do you think if I bought that tool that removes them, i would lessen the risk of bending a valve or something? I am decent with engines for example i changed the alt in my 3k and I can do things like that but i have never did the inside of a motor.
Also, While im there, i should do plugs and all that , so platinum's a must? like the engine sticker says?
