Default How does muffler size affect sound? Thoughts on what size to pick up

Hey, I have been doing some late night research on which mufflers to buy for my 3000GT(with 192K miles, and dying VR-4 exhaust)... and I have found that people dont actually say anything about which muffler was purchased, spec or model number wise. IE most people will say... purchased a magnaflow, or a flowmaster(though I have see the 40 series mentioned often)

Anyway, what size should I get? My tubing is 3"

So I am thinking about buying this and putting it where a driveshaft would be, then piping to tips
Magnaflow 3" inlet, dual 2.25 output.
5x8x18

Should I go with single in and single out... then y split?

Any thoughts? how does size affect sound? I want it Quiet as possible.

I have a Magnaflow (2-1/2 in - 2X 2-1/4 out) it sounds great without being too loud. Flowmaster 40 sounds good, but will be too loud for my taste. I also kept the first resonator - that keeps the sound really smooth, no raspiness of any kind - just V6 music. I followed the recommendations of the installer (Muffler King in Kirkland WA) for a good sounding exhaust that would not be obnoxiously loud. I love it

nothing is going to be as quiet as stock.

i had a crack in my old downpipe right before the cat, and the new single-shot catback (with resonator), cat, and downpipe is actually louder than my stock exhaust when it was cracked.

imho, if you can find a way to make the entire cat-back out of a glass-pack resonator, and then use a good muffler--you'd have the best chance of keeping it quiet.

good luck finding someone who makes it.

my friend has a testpipe back 2.5" exhaust with a Flowmaster 40 series. 1 2.5" in, 2 2.25" out. It sounds like a V8. It sounds deeper and meaner than mustang GT's and V8 camaro's. I will see if I can a video of it for you.

I have a catalytic convertor and 2 magnaflow mufflers behind it. It's still way louder than stock.

I put on a 3" in

I also put my stock airbox back on. Its quieted the car donw a good amount. I just hope that I can avoid tickets.

i have the flowmaster 40 series. i have headers, cat and a full 2 1/2 inch pipe all the way back...it sounds mean but is not too loud. i when i put the muffler on before i had the local shop do the piping it was not really any louder than stock unitl you got up in the rpm range. mines also a single in single out so it would prolly be quieter than the dual out on your 3kgt
