Mitsubishi CAS Replacement...

My 93 3000gt SL had what seems a misfire every 20 seconds consistantly. I pulled over and it wouldn't start again. After searching and reading why the car is not getting spark, I've come up with the following reasons,
Bad CAS,or bad PTU. How big of a job is it to replace the CAS? I looked on napa for a replacement and it said the car has a left and a right sensor... Is this correct or is there only one? I've also reas that it is behind the crank sprocket. Will I have to remove the timing belt to fix this?

There is a crank sensor by the timing belt pulley cog, and a cam sensor on the rear head on the exhaust came I believe. I am pretty sure they can be changed with out removing the timing belt. Have you tested your coilpacks?

edit: If you Have not read this yet, I highly recommend you do.

Yes the CAS is beside the crank sprocket, you can change it without taking off the timming belt, you have to remove the belts, Crank Pully, Timming belt covers, and then you will have access to it, held down by 2 10mm bolts, just becareful you dont get to rough while putting in the new one, they arnt hard to break. did test the CAS yet? if you take a volt meter and read one of the 3 leads from the CAS you can see if its working or not while cranking the engine. its in the FSM.

Mitsubishi Re: CAS Replacement...

What's an FSM? On my offday i'm going to take off the timing cover and see if it jumped teeth. What kind of notches should I be looking for? If it jumped I might as well same up for a used head and or getting new valves and a re-worked head. Thanks for the input guys!

Also, after replacing the crank sensor on my cavalier it required a crank angle sensor error relearn. Will this be needed for the 3k?

Mitsubishi Re: CAS Replacement...

The CEL would only come on when the car jerked. Stayed on for a second, then went away. It did the jerking and CEL every consistant 20 seconds. I STILL have not received my datalogging cable, because the idiot on eBay backordered it for a week, while claiming the item IN-HAND! I have a feeling that I will be unsuccessful at retrieving the codes as I think the codes are cleared after 50 ignition cycles. At least thats how it is on OBDII. I would check the ECU, but I am unsure how to get it. I really need to purchase an FSM for this car. Anyways, today is an offday, so I am going to purchase a "portable" garage and start tearing this car apart...

Both sensors are easily (well not difficultly!) tested with a multimeter and (PTU) a 1.5v battery.

Save yourself all the expense and effort by testing before you jump to conclusions about whats really wrong.
