I think the ultimate theory is that the underdrive / aluminum pulleys, whether on our application or any other make/model where light weight pulleys are available, is that they don't actually ADD horsepower. What they do is to decrease the drivetrain LOSS ratio. The engine can rev faster/easier, and the power generated by the motor has less motor/weight to turn in essence so more of the power it generates actually makes it through to the wheels to be measured by a wheel dyno. It's the same concept as light weight wheels, flywheels, cf driveshafts, etc. Less weight in the driveline.
And as far as the accessories actually taking power from the car, well, if you're ever had the ac compressor or alternator off of a car, or teh belts off, those things take ZERO effort to spin. You just flick them and they turn and turn and turn.... So for those, just turn the AC off and there's your power gain regardless of WHAT pulley you have. ![]() That's my "i got two business degrees" theory ![]() EricB

i didn't even know these things gave you more power, i just bought one to stop my A/C from squeeling...
by the way, steve and eric...if you remember me and my dad from like a week ago on the phone, we were the ones who couldn't get the damn crank pulley off the car. the breaker bar being held back by the control arm worked very well. we clicked the ignition and the thing popped loose. thanks for the help

yes get it it is awesome... i had the exact same question and since i'm a shitty auto it feels as if you have od off and power mode on when you don't and it's a lot of extra kick when you have that stuff on anyways so my recommendations would be to get it as soon as you can and you will not regret it.

The Underdrive Pulley is great. Everyone on the board that has it will agree with me. Once you get it you will never regret it. There has yet to be any board member to report a flaw or accident caused directly by the Lightened Underdrive Pulley.
By the way, THEONLYPHEONIX...would you please post up the email you recieve from Unorthadox, I would love to see how they respond to your email. Thanx man. ![]()

I do have to give credit to the Roger G. , Jeff Lucius, NIGHTMARE, and all the rest that take the time and money to get us REAL data
on the performance increases with certain mods. These guys take it to the level of a science experiment! Some of the questions I've asked Unorthodox are good ones. If they answer back with some real meaty answers or data I'll post their response, other wise I'm not going to propagate their marketing material. thanks for being patient with me. ![]()

Phoenix, what meaty numbers do you have on the hi flow cat? The cold air intake? The K&N? The platinum plugs? The DP for that matter?
I know I'm being a pain in the a#* but I've been on this board for a while now and each of these have been argued give anywhere from great increases to no increases to even being detrimental (ie the platinum plugs over copper). Most of these are reviewed by personal experience: the famous butt dyno. It seems that when you're a doubter, you can't be convinced, and when you're convinced, you won't ever doubt (ie you're header deal). If you check out other threads(like the current DP group buy) there are "good questions" about the headers too! Just offering an opinion. Last edited by Audiophobe : 09-22-2002 at 10:09 AM. |

Well putting aside the crank pulleys for a second....
Unorthodox has put out lightened pulleys for the accessories for some cars as well. Would we stand to gain if we lightened ALL of the pulleys not just the crank pulley? How much does the a/c pulley weigh and the alt pulley??? |

Audiophobe, sorry I missed your point
This thread started as questions on 3SX/ lighten pulleys, which I also have questions on. If you want to address the group buy on DOHC headers, why don't you take it to that thread? Personally I learn by researching (many hours of text book work and internet searches), asking questions of the design engineers and experienced users (racer car drivers and race organization staffers) that have been down the path before and lastly, first hand observations and data taking with the tools on hand( over 35 years worth of hands on).
