Whats your oil pressure like?

I had a slight lifter tick on my car...... then I let my dad take the car out for a rip and when he came back it was ticking like mad. The reason the ticking got louder was because he had spun a bearing which caused the oil pressure to drop and the ticking to get louder. Do you hear any other noises when you rev it up? Like a clattering type noise? If so......

lifter tick only gets louder if your oil level drops. And if your oil level does drop, you have to worry about spun bearings. a spun bearing can sound alot like lifter tick in its early stages. Hope it is just the lifters in your case. Change the oil, and make sure it is filled all the way up to the full indicator and then let it warm up before checking again. If still getting ticking noises, you'll have to determine if the ticking is lifter generated, exhaust generated, or lower end generated. When it sounds like a a hammer on metal, it isn't the lifters anymore dorothy.... it is the path to hell.

since most of crew is at NG right now, the left overs will have to help you till they get back.

My car just does it at idle, the oil pressure on my car has always been low. When I change the oil the gauges seems to read 2-3 ticks from the bottom and just seems to sit around there all the time.

Shit, my car ticks really bad too, what are other signs of a spun bearing?
Can I just drive around like this or what?

jack up and support the front end. then start the car and listen to the oil pan before it gets hot. If its a spun bering it will be much louder.

3/S love to tick!

Lifter tick is normal... poor lifter design so blame mitsu for that noise... (unless you replace them with 3rd gen lifters, but they will also tick when it too cold)

signs of a spun bearing? all I have to say is; trust me, you will know once you get one! the sound wakes up the dead and will send chills down any man's back! Its like you have someone inside your engine with a hammer banging the shit out of it!!! the sound will get louder and louder when you rev it... its def not nice!

If you change your own oil... you should check for metal shavings... this could save you hundreds of dollars in repairs...

spun bearing for the most part are oil related... so make sure your oil pressure is nice and high... and if not... then do something about it... (make sure you have oil!!! (some lube places never put enough oil in there: its 4.75qts, hell put 5 in there just in case!), change oil pump... switch weights on the oil (go higher), stop running your car pig rich (gas+oil=water down oil (no protection), check your oil pan for dents (many shops love jacking these cars up from the oil pan putting a huge ass dent next to the pick-up line... and thats an invitation to join the spun bearing club).

Anyway... try doing a search on this subject... there are tons of threads on this... its one of the most talked about subjects here on 3si... almost as much as "what BOV should I get!" and "NWS Girls, Girls, Girls" hahaha

D.

PS: also you guys should check the connection plug for the oil gauge next to the oil pan... sometimes it gets too dirty and it reads very low... you should unplug it... clean it (electrical cleaner - spray can) then re-plug it... it should read normal once again... and it will give you a better idea on whats going on with your oil pressure... Oh, and dont think the stock gauge is very accurate... it actually blows...

Watch this video, after the supra kills the bike he spins a rod bearing. You hear how loud it is as he "limps" home.

If your gauge is reading low near the bottom two or three ticks, your pump likely needs to be replaced. I replaced mine at the 60k and 100k marks. Do not run these cars out of oil, the bearings are not very forgiving, especially not with the stress of boost added to normal wear. As bad as everyone seems to think these cars are, they are really dependable at the stresses the factory put in place. At 80-100k miles, pretty much every pump should be replaced. The pumps are cheap compared to a bearing going out. Mine always read above half way, not quite three quarters. Factory gauge is fine, knowing the pressure would be better but you really only glance at the gauge occasionally or quickly.

While slightly overfilling the oil is ok, it is not recommended to put too much oil in. After all, it is only as good as the pump shooting it thru the block.

Bearings only sound nasty once it lets go and gets driven on a bit. Except when racing, when it occurs all at once. I knew the moment it happened, i heard the bearing slip or the piston clank the first time. I suspected what had happened immediately, but drove it home, then took it out for a few 100mph runs and two hard 0-80 launches, the launches felt like i was running on 5 or 4 cylinders but still was smooth. I had just had 99 lifters put in so they were quiet as a mouse except on start up when they chatter a bit. As i pulled into the driveway after about 30 minutes of driving, i had set the drunken dwarf free inside the engine with his hammer. At that point it isn't the bearing you are hearing it is rod knock and driving with rod knock just seperates the walls of the block from the piston, or sets it free entirely.
