about five months ago.... i was driving my car on regular streets in the city going about 40mph when my car started to sputter and slow down and i noticed blue smoke everywhere.... about 1/4 mile away i parked my car and saw that the blue smoke was billowing out of both tailpipes, needless to say i turned off the car but after awhile i tried to start it again and it wouldnt start at all... i had to garage the car and use my eclipse for the time being but now that my eclipse broke down i decided to throw some time and effort (and money) into my vr4... the car is a 1991 vr4 with just over 180k miles on it... i bought it at 160,000 and i don't think the last owner took very good care of it... from what i've read the most likely causes would be piston rings or turbos but i don't know how to identify either problem... how can i tell if a turbo is blown?? and how much time would it take to check piston rings? or could it be another problem i should check altogether? any input would be appreciated

There is a lot of work ahead of you, and many things to check. First I would drain the oil, and look for coolant in it. That could mean a blown head gasket. Then I would check the shaft play on the turbos - it does sound like a seal could have blown out and started dumping oil into the intake. Pull your spark plugs and inspect - if they're coated with oil, they probably won't start the car. Check your timing, and check your timing belt for tension. Perform a compression / leakdown test. Good luck with it! Have you done a 60k service / was the 120k done? -Ryan
