I replaced the bad caps on my ecu last weekend. they had leaked. I took electronics engineering technology in college so i am pretty sure that it works.
the cas wiring looks to be ok and i am definitely getting spark.
what is the plug on on the bank of 3 that attaches to the intake plenum nearest the firewall? (the plug closest to the firewall) I had to replace that connector. The wire appears to bugger off somewhere down on the other side of the rear head...
upon closer inspection lest night after cranking, I found a little bit of oil coming down from my oil cap and when i took it off there was a little bit of smoke (burnt/unburnt gas). There was a faint smell of gas in my oil. Could this just be from too many attempts at cranking or is this blowby indicating bad compression? i'm getting a compression tester tonight.

Most likely from multiple start attempts but compression test is good idea. The rear connector you was asking about is most likely for the Throttle position Sensor.
Have you done a pressure test. When I rebuilt my engine i had a huge vac leak where manifold was not seating with the lower portion bc the rear bracket I used to pull the motor was bent a little. After I tightened that down it fired right up.

on other thing, i know you said the cams were in right, however, if you loosen the exhaust at where it connects to the turbos(front and back) and the car starts, then cams on the front head are reversed, the car will run(badly) and the intake will get hot right away. I know this from experience but if you switch them back all will be well (was for me anyway), it's worth checking into before you light the poor thing on fire.
