Adding cam angle sensor to 92 6G72 - custom

Hi all,

New to the boards and wondering if anyone can assist. I have a 92 6G72 motor, fully built and customized - custom intake, headers, Garrett 63mm turbos, etc. This is going in an 87 Mitsubishi Starion, primarily for track, but aiming to make it a street legal beast as well.

For ignition, I am using 3 X MSD 8224 coil packs (GM style - wasted spark). I am having a Megasquirt II ecu built by DIYAutotune, and I was told that I'll need the 93-99 crank positioning sensor as well as a cam angle sensor for the timing. Per these instructions, MS2-Extra Mitsubishi 6g72 Manual

The MS-II ecu will be built as follows:

MS2357-C Assembled Megasquirt-II with V3.57 PCB
MOD_x357-INV5VIN: 5 volt inverted Hall/Optical input for VW or HEI
MOD_2357-2ND5VIN: 2nd Ignition Input w/ 5 volt pull up

CLTIATwPiggy Coolant temperature sensor

The current configuration has the crank position sensor on the back of the cam, the larger saucer style. There is no cam angle sensor on this build.

Has anyone added the 93+ cam angle sensor to a 92 configuration? Wondering if I need to swap out any valve covers, if there is some tip or trick someone has, etc... Also, I am assuming that utilizing the 92 crank positioning sensor and a 93-99 cam angle sensor would be fine, but if someone has contradicting information, I am all ears.

I can't see where it would make a difference... Both style sensors make the same signals. The earlier CAS is an optical sensor, and the separate CKP/CMP sensors are hall effect, so there's a minute difference in latency, but with a tunable EMS I can't see that being an issue.

Sounds good, thanks! Will that 93-99 cam angle sensor mount right up to the 92 style motor? Wondering if I need to make up some brackets or if would just bolt right in. That'd probably be too easy.

The 91-92 engine used a CAS.(that's what you have) The later models used the CKP/CMP combo. The cylinder head and oil pump were both changed to accommodate them, so you won't be simply bolting them on.

That's why I suggested just running with what you have...

I see, thanks, that's good info. I was just concerned that the guy from DIYAutotune mentioned that I needed both signals to get everything to function properly - guess I'll just need to do some more research in regards to the megasquirt and making it function with just the CAS. I'm sure there's a way... there always is.

It's a non issue... The CAS makes both signals. It's two sensors in one housing. Other than a minute difference in latency,(somewhere around 4deg. difference at redline) it's the same thing as having the separate sensors.

x2. non issue. Goodluck with the MSNS. Ran it on a few custom projects with great success. Be patient trying to start the car. After that itas down hill. And thanks for the new desktop background.

Thanks again for the info everyone, it's a huge help! I've got the ECU in hand now, and motor is mounted... got a guy working on an adapter plate for a TH350 trans, but until then, I can finish up what I have to work with.
