I pulled both heads on my 94TT's original motor with the motor in the car. It was the first time I had ever done anything like that, but it was a HUGE PITA! I wish I had just pulled the motor. However, I know I would be able to do it much faster now.

To answer the question, you can pull the head with the turbo and manifold connected to the head. You will need to drop the downpipe and remove the rear o2 housing, or at least disconnect it and let it sit off to the side.

Clint, sorry to hear your loss but yours went 5K more than my oem original engine...same problem too. I put in a Rockville OEM short block but reused the rear bank's 99 lifters that had 30K are them and they gave up at the NG.Now it's rear bank work..bah__

Not sure I know what the problem is with mine yet. What happened to yours at 225K?

All I know is that mine suddenly got noisy but did not change for ~150 miles. Then I reset timing that was off a couple teeth on rear bank which made no difference to noise and then it got a lot worse within 2 miles - I pressed in clutch - engine bogged down and stalled.

Sound sure seemed to be top end noise not deep engine knocking so I am still leaning towards slipped timing leading to a valve strike or collapsed hydraulic lifer and not a spun bearing.

My dilema is that this is my daily driver and I don't have any extra time to screw around with it right now.

I am still tempted to re-time the motor and re-start it to see if the sound is still present. (Although obviously a waste time if I have spun a bearing.)

I didnt see it mentioned but are you sure it was valve train noise?

My TOB was making a HORRBLE racket and when I depressed the clutch, it stalled.

Being the timing only jumped 2 teeth I'd have a hard time beleiving you bent valves.

Clint
last time I pressurized my cylinders with the valves closed you could definently hear air escaping into the crankcase.

It makes perfect sense because even on a perfect engine you are going to have some leakdown. Judging by my not so scientific leakdown test I would estimate my leakdown between 5 and 10%

Encouraging news.... mine has a faint hiss, can't really tell if it is rings or valves. HUGE rush of air when I open any of the valves. Also encouraging that all of the cylinders appear to be the same.

(Very different from when I attempted to pressurize cylinder when I had a shattered valve.)

I just noticed this thread. Back when I was replacing my VSS, mine made a hissing sound when I applied pressure to cylinders also. It seemed to be leaking past the rings, not valves. The engine was cold, which I imagine made it worse. Your engine is cold also, I would assume

Good luck. No fun when things like this happen to daily driver.

How many miles on your timing belt tensioner? (the device with spring and plunger). Mine was shot at 150k. not sure if it was original or not.
