I have my engine on my stand and putting things back together. I am unable to comfortably and confidently do the timing belt correctly. I am hoping someone in the DFW area is competent w/ this and can help me. It should be pretty easy in the fact the engine is out in the open. I really need to get this done to continue my progress and get things ready for nov 11.

I might be there in the next month to two months but by then you should be done with it. Its a fun experience to learn how to do timing belt.
Grey I would almost say let him do it with your supervision. Its something that I should have done for the guys in ABQ but by the time we got to that part I just wanted the car out of my garage.
Good luck

Hitting my truck will cause the same damage that a rock causes on the truck bumper. Shall we test it.
Phil, i followed that to a tee. I couldn't get it right. I even have the cam locks which helped. I had all the marks lined up. The belt on. The tensioner pulley torqued to 7ft-lbs. I go to turn the crank and after about 30deg of clockwise rotation i couldn't turn it anymore and the timing belt was extremely tight and compressed the tensioner plunger. I had to untorque the tensioner pulley and now my brand new tensioner plunger is sticking out like a 12 year old looking at porn for the first time.
i got the pin, i know i can compress it, just need abig enough vise. Dont have plugs in.
What would cause the belt to get so tight that i couldnt turn the crank

If your timing is off maybe your pistons are hitting your valves, thus not allowing you to turn the crank. Hope that's not the case because you may end up with some bent valves.
Every timing belt job i've done i was able to turn the crank by hand, even with the plugs in.

What are you using to turn the crank? Basically, how much mechanical advantage do you have when you can no longer turn it?
If the spark plugs are OUT, the only resistance you should feel is the friction force being being exerted on the rings of the pistons as well as the force being exerted on the cam lobes by the compressing valve springs.
There is no good reason for the engine to bind in this situation. I've seen a couple bind, however, and I'd be more than willing to give you all the support/advice I can if you gave me a call the next time you were in the garage.
I'm confused as to why you only torqued the tensioner pulley to 7 ft-lbs. Even if you NAIL it (so that the grenade pin spins freely after rotating the engine by hand a few revolutions), when you tighten the bolt to the correct spec (what is it, 30 ft-lbs?) the tension in the belt will INCREASE therefore preventing the grenade pin from free spinning... As far as I know, this free-spin I'm describing is the only way to determine if you have the correct tension in the belt when the timing marks all line up.
If you're slightly TIGHTER than "perfect/oem" don't sweat it. The timing belt on my VR4 is considerably tighter than "oem" ... Granted, it's Kevlar.
Okay, now I'm just rambling. Call me if you want any advice Joe.
