Dodge Re: Another F&%@#$* cop to watch out for

What I don't get is how the hell they justified paying for a Japanese car; Subaru's aren't exactly cheap.

On a more curious note, I wonder what kind of modifications it has that will make it a decent cop car. For example, all the Crown Victorias basically have the Cobra drivetrain under them. Does this Legacy have the STi drivetrain? Because a stock Legacy automatic is pretty slow.

Well, it is a Legacy GT...They're pretty quick, car and driver tested them at 14 seconds flat in the 1/4 mile at 98mph.

That is decently quick for a stock car but Car and Driver tends to put down lower times than the rest of the test magazines or the real world (perhaps they have the best drivers or shortest track, I don't know) so I'd say mid to low 14s. Also, was the Car and Driver test done with an automatic and a bunch of computers and BS weighing it down, more than likely not. Not that it matters, but unless the Legacy they have has some serious power adders (tuning, turbos, something) I wouldn't expect that car to be able to run down some of the other more threatening cars on the road; Corvette Z06 comes to mind (the modded Crown Vics stand a better chance).

Well the Legacy GT has the 2.5L engine which pretty much makes it an elongated STi with a different body. Also, the average info I've found on it says that it runs a 14.3 @ 96.9. For a car right out of the factory it is pretty quick but I'd guess they've added about 500lbs of equipment into that car which will take it's toll on the car's performance. Will it run down most cars on the road and accelerate quickly to catch them? Oh hell yeah, that car could cruise traffic and you or I could blow by it without even realizing it's a cop, then, next thing you know, he's on the back bumper which would be my guess as to why they bought it. However, if whom ever he decides to chase decides to run, the Legacy will only do so well unless they've done serious performance mods to it because on the top end, that 4 cyl won't keep up because there is no replacement for displacement. Basically, as with what Dave said, it is another thing out there that we now have to keep an eye out for but if it was to try and tail Tim, they'd better get a built V-8 or a helo to catch his crazy ass.

Yeah, they're slower to accelerate but they don't fall off at the top end.

It's not like this thing is going to be a highway patrol car, they use their faster cars for that. This thing is going to be used for their stupid speed traps and such.
