UV - does pretty much nothing except to protect the lens. the sensor has a UV low-pass filter anyway to filter out UV rays.

Polarizer - reduces glare on shiny items like fruit, glass, water, etc.

I still stand by my statement that the reason your pics are dark is because your shutter speed is way too fast for the amount of light you were shooting in. The EXIF data from your images confirms this.

Haha, what? No, experiment with different apertures (f/stops), as they will lend themselves to different effects. Generally, the sharpest images happen in the f/8-f/16 range. Anything below, or above those apertures will look slightly out of focus due to either a wide open aperture, or diffraction. Remember that as you decrease the size of the aperture (larger number), you increase your depth of field, or the area of the image that is in focus. Also, looking at those night time photos, you seem to have a circular polarizer, not a UV haze filter.

Same here... I basically stick to Av (my "general everything" mode), Tv (for pans), and Sports mode (for still frames of moving subjects).

I'm gonna have to try my CPL filter some time. I have filters but haven't really gotten into using them yet (other than the "lens protector" filter ). I did some night shots of cars last weekend (TX2K8 Supra meet) and some reduction in glare spots would have been handy.
