Right now, Rebel XTi with 17-55mm f2.8 IS on it most of the time. also 50mm f1.8 (at its price everyone should have one) and an old FD macro zoom lens with a converter ring.... No real need to upgrade the rebel body to a T1i or anything, it still does great. Money is going into the lenses, and I've made a commitment to the EF-S series since i got the 17-55mm... Next up 10-22mm EF-S wide angle and 60mm macro.
Eventually I'd like a 5DmkII and some L-series lenses (full frame CMOS ftw) but, alas I can't afford one right now, so the money is going into lenses and lighting... Although The lenses will always have great resale value if i wanted to trade up at some point.
So you took the $900 plunge on the 17-55 huh? I hear its a great lens. I too wouldnt upgrade until you are ready for a full frame sensor model (5d). You are doing right by getting your glass first.
This was actually taken with a Canon Digital Rebel (first gen) with the standard 18-55mm Kit Lens... One of the first pictures I ever took when the rebel first came out haha... Since then, ive got an XTi and a variety of lenses, but I still have some excellent shots from when i used the kit lens Flickr: More detail about Stargazer Lily
You took that with a 1st gen Rebel? Damn, I gotta work on my photography skills. Too much PAS action in my life.

Forum ate my post...but yes the 17-55mm IS lens is the 800lb gorilla of that range. Some argue that it is better than the 14-70mm L for walk around (as it is faster)..hell some argue that it is the best non-L lens you can get in that range period.

Yea, ive heard good things about it as well. I actually been doing a bunch of research on that focal range of lenses and just took the plunge on its major competitor...Tamron 17-50 F2.4. It too has some awesome reviews. Love it!
Yeah it took me like 6 months of reading reviews and comparisons and looking at sample photos to finally decide on it and it really is excellent quality. I think the only reason it isn't an L series is because its EF-S...
It does have a minor dust problem because of the construction though. a UV haze glass filter keeps it perfectly clean, but my filter broke in my bag one day (better than the lens) and since then dust has been collecting under the front element.
I might have to send it in for cleaning after i replace the filter so it doesn't happen again. It doesn't really affect image quality, but it really bothers me seeing it.

Tamron and Tokina are awesome. Sigma is hit or miss.
I wouldnt mind having a few of them in a large format for around the house.
if you are interested, send me a PM with which ones and I can see how much it would be to get some printed up and sent to you... I haven't really figured out a pricing model yet either. It wouldn't be much, just something to get funds trickling back into more equipment etc

I hate dust. My canon 28-135 seems to like to let particles get by as well. Mine creeps in through the barrel though. I would send it in for its free cleaning if you have had it for less than a year.

Yea, each one has its strong points, but the tammy seems to have the best image quality, and less CA, if you dont manage to get an out of focus China copy. My downside is no ultrasonic motor and sometimes finicky low light focusing. I can live with that though.
